The American tennis champions in university sports are determined annually at the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships . It is the most important and prestigious tournament in college tennis , which traditionally takes place in May at different locations and closes the season.

history

As early as 1883, the United States National Lawn Tennis Association organized the previous tournament of the NCAA Championships. Only men's competitions were held. The NCAA first organized the tournament in 1946. A women's tournament followed in 1982. In 2006, the two tournaments were merged. Since then, they have been held in one place.

Records

• The USC was the men's team champion 21 times, most recently in 2014.
• The Stanford University was in the women's 19-times team champion, last 2018th

mode

There are two tournament phases: In the first, the team champions are determined; in the second, the singles and doubles competitions follow. The mode is identical for women and men.

64 teams take part in the team competition every year. The first and second round games are not yet taking place at the location of the actual tournament. Here a university acts as the host for the games of four teams, one of which enters the tournament of the top 16. The opening games will take place in 16 different locations in the USA. In the singles, the main field consists of 64 players; in doubles there are 32 pairs at the start. The game is played on two winning sets. The title holders secure a wildcard for the main field of the US Open . However, the wildcard is only given to players with US citizenship.
