Rodney Harmon (born August 16, 1961 in Richmond , Virginia ) is a retired American tennis player .
Life
Harmon studied at the University of Tennessee and was voted two times in the All-American selection. He won the NCAA championships in doubles with Mel Purcell in 1980 . He was also twice champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference . While still a student, he took part in the 1982 US Open . He reached the quarterfinals after winning over the favored Brian Teacher and Eliot Teltscher , where he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Jimmy Connors . After Arthur Ashe, he was only the second African American to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. He finished his studies in 1983 and then became a tennis professional.
In 1984 he reached the semi-finals of the Queen's Club Championships , and the following year he won his only title on the ATP World Tour in Nancy alongside Marcel Freeman . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1983 with position 56 in singles and 1985 with position 203 in doubles.
In singles, his best result in a Grand Slam tournament was the quarter-finals at the 1982 US Open. In the doubles competition, he reached the second round of the US Open the following year.
After the end of his professional career, he worked as a tennis coach at the University of Miami . Since 2002 he has headed the youth department of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
