The University of Tennessee (including UT Knoxville or UTK is called) is a state university in Knoxville in the US state of Tennessee . With 27,281 students, it is the principal college of the University of Tennessee system . The university also includes the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma .

history

The University of Tennessee was founded on September 10, 1794 as Blount College . It was given its current name in 1879. Women have been admitted since 1893 and African-Americans since 1952.
