Christopher Jason Witten (born May 6, 1982 in Elizabethton , Tennessee ) is an American football player . He has played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys for 15 years and has been back for them since 2019 after a year of retirement. In the meantime, Witten worked as a sports expert at ESPN . Witten is currently under contract with the Las Vegas Raiders .

career

Witten played American football in high school in his hometown. He played as a tight end and linebacker . At his college , the University of Tennessee , it was only used as a tight end. After three years, he left college early. Witten was signed in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys as the 69th player. The cowboys were trained by Bill Parcells , who also used Witten as a starter during his first season . In this game round he got 35 pass catches. In 2007 Witten had its best year statistically. By Tony Romo , who is from the 2006 season as a starting quarterback established the Cowboys, repeatedly set the scene, he scored in the 2007 season 96 pass catches for a space gain of 1,145 yards . He also equaled the NFL record for the most passes caught in a game as a tight end that year with 15 pass catches. In 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2014, Witten and his team were able to qualify for the play-offs . On December 7, 2015, he broke the 19-16 success over the Washington Redskins as the twelfth player in NFL history and only the second tight end after Tony Gonzalez the mark of 1,000 passes.

He took part in the Pro Bowl eleven times , the season final game of the best players of the season. After 15 seasons for the Cowboys, Witten ended his active career shortly after the 2018 draft to start as a sports expert at ESPN. His performance as an analyst for Monday Night Football has been largely described as poor. On February 28, 2019, Witten announced that he would be returning from retirement and playing with the Cowboys. He signed a one-year contract for $ 5 million.

Prior to the 2020 season , Witten signed a $ 4 million one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders .

Off the NFL

Witten is married to a nurse and has two sons and daughters each. He is involved in his own foundation that supports children from difficult backgrounds.
