 <2018 2020>

The 2019 NFL season marked the 100th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The season began on March 13, 2019. The regular season began on September 5, 2019 with the Chicago Bears' game against the Green Bay Packers and ended on December 29, 2019. The play-offs started on January 4, 2020 and ended on February 2, 2020 with Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens , Florida . Champions were the Kansas City Chiefs , who could beat the San Francisco 49ers with 31:20.

The salary cap rose to 188.2 million US dollars .

Rule changes

At the annual league meeting at the end of March 2019, the following rule changes were decided:

  • The changes to the kickoff rules from the 2018 season were permanently incorporated into the rules.
  • A blindside block is redefined as a foul when a player initiates a block by moving on or parallel to his own end line and making violent contact with his opponent with his helmet, forearm or shoulder. It is also advised that a player can initiate violent contact within the tackle box but is subject to the crackback and "peelback" block restrictions.
  • Change in the enforcement of double fouls when transferring ownership.
  • The rules for missed field goals have been simplified.
  • If an offensive foul is committed after scoring a touchdown , the defensive team can now choose whether to apply it for the kickoff as before or for the point after touchdown .
  • League staff are allowed to disqualify people during a game.
  • For now only for one season, Pass Interference , whether called by the referees or not, will be allowed to be verified by video evidence . The automatic review within the last two minutes of a half or in overtime has also been extended to include pass interference. Initially, the regulation stipulated that the coaches had to request the decision to be examined within the last two minutes of a half or overtime. This should prevent the game from being interrupted too often towards the end, since every forward pass could be an occasion for a more detailed examination. In June 2019, however, the regulation was changed by the Competition Committee , so that the decision on video evidence rests with the Replay Official again . However, in comparison to other verifiable decisions, stricter criteria are applied.

Brown was sorted out by his previous team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, for game week 17 of the preseason (December 30, 2018) due to arguments with teammates and the lack of training and team meetings. He was then traded to the Oakland Raiders for a third and a fifth round pick in March 2019. On August 3, 2019, Brown posted a picture of his foot injuries on Instagram . It turned out that in July 2019, Brown was wearing inadequate footwear in a cold room and got freezer burns on his feet. Not only did he miss the training camp in August - of which he missed ten of the eleven training days - there were also concerns about his operational capability at the beginning of the preseason. Less than a week later, it was also announced that Brown's helmet model had been banned by the NFL for inadequate protection, which prompted Brown to interrupt training and threaten to end his career if he was not allowed to play with his favorite helmet model. Brown filed two complaints against the NFL, both of which he lost. Brown then accepted the new helmet model and returned to training, but missed all preseason games.

Brown posted a letter on Instagram on September 4, 2019 from Oakland Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock notifying him of an approximately $ 54,000 fine for unexcused absenteeism (absence from training and walkthrough). A day later there was a conversation between Brown and Mayock, where there was a heated argument. Brown is also said to have threatened Mayock with beatings. Several teammates intervened and held Brown back - including Vontaze Burfict , who is known for his excessive toughness. The following day, Brown apologized to the team, but a few hours later Brown published a YouTube video containing a recorded phone call with head chef Jon Gruden - in California, publishing a phone recording without consent is a criminal offense. Gruden is said to have been enthusiastic about the video. The next morning he asked the Raiders via Instagram to terminate his contract, as his guaranteed salary of over 29 million US dollars had been canceled due to misconduct and had to pay a fine of over 215,000 US dollars. The Raiders have granted Antonio Brown's request. On the same day - September 7, 2019 - he signed a new contract with the New England Patriots.

On September 10, 2019, Antonio Brown's former trainer Britney Taylor filed a lawsuit. Taylor accuses him of rape and sexual assault. The NFL did not put him on the Commissioner Exempt List , which allowed Brown to play for the Patriots in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. On September 16, 2019, another woman accused Brown of sexual assault. An investigation has been initiated in both cases. Brown and his lawyers denied both allegations. On the same day, Pittsburgh-based Dr. Victor Prisk, who worked with Brown while at the Steelers, brought Antonio Brown over an unpaid bill of $ 11,500. On September 20, 2019, Brown was fired by the Patriots after sending intimidating text messages to his second accuser.

On October 4, 2019, Brown officially filed a lawsuit against the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots, demanding around $ 40 million. A decision is expected in spring 2020.

Since the legal investigations have not been completed or clarified, the NFL can - after an obligation by an NFL club - put him on the Commissioner Exempt List at any time. In December 2019, the New Orleans Saints were interested in a commitment by Brown, but withdrew due to his unclear status.

Browns-Steelers brawl

Scene of the fight

In the final seconds of the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns on November 14, Myles Garrett (Browns defensive end) tackled Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph after Rudolph threw a pass to running back Trey Edmunds. Annoyed by the late tackle, Rudolph attacked Garrett by trying to pull the helmet off Garrett's head. Garrett then tore off Rudolph's helmet and hit Rudolph in the head with it. Then Maurkice Pouncey , center of the Steelers, attacked Garrett and kicked Garrett, who was lying on the ground, in the head. Larry Ogunjobi , Defensive Tackle of the Browns, later joined the brawl by pushing Rudolph from behind. Garrett, Ogunjobi, and Pouncey were all kicked out of the game. After the game, Garrett was suspended for the remainder of the season (6 games), while Pouncey was given a 2-game suspension and Ogunjobi was given a 1-game suspension.

Others

In April 2019, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson gave an early four-year contract extension. With an average earnings of $ 35 million a year, he became the highest paid player in NFL history. His signing bonus of 65 million and his guaranteed salary of 107 million US dollars are also new league records. The record for the highest guaranteed salary was set by Carson Wentz (107.9 million) and Jared Goff ( 110.9 million) before the first match day Million) broken. Beginning in July 2019 was defensive tackle Kendrick Norton of the Miami Dolphins involved in a car accident. He suffered severe arm injuries, which is why his left arm had to be amputated. On July 31, 2019, the New Orleans Saints gave Michael Thomas , who was the final year of his rookie contract, a five-year deal for $ 100 million. This made him the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history and the first non-quarterback whose contract exceeded the 100 million mark. On September 28, 2019, the NFL announced that it had negotiated a new collective agreement with the NFL Referees Association . The collective agreement valid for the 2019 season should expire in May 2020, the new collective agreement ends in May 2026.

NFL draft

Kyler Murray was selected as the first player in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The 2019 draft took place in Nashville , Tennessee , from April 25-27, 2019 . Since the Arizona Cardinals had the worst season record in the past 2018 season, they had the right to select the first player in the draft. They decided on the quarterback Kyler Murray of the Oklahoma Sooners of the University of Oklahoma . The Cardinals, who elected Josh Rosen tenth in the 2018 NFL Draft , became the first team since the 1982/1983 Baltimore Colts to choose a quarterback in consecutive first-round drafts.

Preseason

The preseason began on August 1, 2019 with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons . These two teams are the only ones to play five preseason games, all the others only four. The Los Angeles Rams played their preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys at Aloha Stadium in Oahu , Hawaii . No NFL game has been played there since the Pro Bowl was handed over to Orlando , Florida in 2016 . The Green Bay Packers played their third preseason game against the Oakland Raiders at IG Field in Winnipeg , Canada.
