William "Will" Raymond Smith III (born July 4, 1981 in Queens , New York City , New York - † April 9, 2016 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American American football player. He played ten seasons as the defensive end for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL).

New Orleans Saints

Smith was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints . In 2006 he was appointed to the Pro Bowl . In 2008 the Saints extended his contract for seven years. In 2009 he won the Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints . In 2012 he was involved in the Bountygate scandal, for which he received a four-game ban, which was however lifted. In a preseason game of the 2013 season he tore a cruciate ligament, which ended the season prematurely for him. After the season he was fired from the Saints.

In early October 2019, the Saints announced that they would posthumously add Smith to their Ring of Honor.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots signed him on May 5, 2014, but released him on August 24, 2014.

On April 9, 2016, Smith was involved in a car accident. After the accident, the other party pulled a gun, shot Smith and injured his wife. Smith died at the accident site at the age of 34. In addition to his wife, he also left three children. The perpetrator was arrested by the police.
