Life

Payton was born in San Mateo , California and grew up in Naperville , Illinois . He went to Eastern Illinois University , where he graduated with a degree in communications . For the Eastern Illinois Panthers he played as quarterback and scored 10,665 passing yards.

In the 1987 NFL Draft he was not selected and initially played in the Arena Football League for the Chicago Bruisers and the Pittsburgh Gladiators . He later made it to the Chicago Bears squad as a substitute . There he played three games in which he threw an interception against the New Orleans Saints, his later team as head coach . Other positions of Payton as a player were the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League and in 1988 briefly with the Leicester Panthers in the United Kingdom.

From 1988 he was active as a trainer, he began as an offensive assistant with the San Diego Aztecs . He then worked from 1990 to 1991 for the Indiana State Sycamores as a trainer for the running backs and wide receivers . In 1992 he returned to San Diego as the coach of the running backs, and from 1994 he took on the position of quarterback coach for the Miami RedHawks from Ohio . After he held this position in 1996 with the Illinois Fighting Illinois , he moved to the NFL in 1997.

First he was from 1997 for two seasons as quarterback coach of the Philadelphia Eagles . In 1999 he moved to the New York Giants , where he was offensive coordinator from 2000 . From 2003 to 2005 he was quarterback coach for the Dallas Cowboys and assistant to the head coach.

In 2006 he got the post as head coach with the New Orleans Saints . In his first year he reached the playoffs with them directly , but they were missed in the following 2 seasons.

In the 2009 season , the Saints were able to win their first 13 games of the season. The last three regular season games were lost, but the Saints nonetheless won the NFC South and thus moved into the playoffs. They got into the Divisional Round, in which the Arizona Cardinals were defeated. In the NFC Championship game , the Saints were able to prevail in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings and thus move into the Super Bowl . There they met the favorite Indianapolis Colts at Sun Life Stadium in Miami , Florida . There the Saints were able to prevail with 31:17 and win the first Super Bowl in the club's history.

In the 2012 season Payton was banned for an entire season as the first head coach of the NFL because of the "bounty scandal". An illegal payment of bonuses to players for injuring opposing players was revealed. The action was initiated by Defensive Coordinator Greg Williams.

The playoffs were missed every time between 2014 and 2016, but since then the Saints have won the NFC South every year and have thus moved into the playoffs. In 2018 Payton led his team again into the NFC Championship Game, in which they however had to admit defeat to the Los Angeles Rams .
