Thomas Richard "Tom" Coughlin (born August 31, 1946 in Waterloo , New York ) is an American American football coach and official. From 2004 to 2015 he was the head coach of the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL), with which he was able to win Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots. Coughlin was the first head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars , who joined the NFL in 1995 as an expansion team .
Coaching career
Early stations
After Coughlin had played successfully as a wide receiver at Syracuse University , he began his coaching career in 1970 as head coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology . After several years as an assistant coach in Syracuse and at Boston College , he switched to the NFL for the first time as a wide receiver coach in 1984. He first worked for the Philadelphia Eagles , then for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants . At the Giants, he was an assistant to Bill Parcells and won the Super Bowl XXV with the team against the Buffalo Bills . In 1991 he was hired as the head coach of Boston College and was extremely successful with the team.
Jacksonville Jaguars
After Coughlin's success as a college coach in Boston, the newly formed Jacksonville Jaguars became aware of him while looking for their first head coach and signed him for their first season in 1995. Coughlin made the Jaguars the most successful expansion team in his eight years as head coach the history of the NFL. The Jaguars reached the AFC finals twice , the first time in the second year of their existence. In 1996 , Coughlin was named Coach of the Year for this. Coughlin achieved 72 wins with the Jaguars and 64 losses (4-4 in the playoffs). For the 2017 season, Coughlin returned to the Jacksonville Jaguars as vice president.
New York Giants
After a year off, Coughlin was named head coach of the New York Giants in 2004. Coughlin took over a team in crisis and had a controversy over the quarterback position between veteran Kurt Warner and first-round draft pick Eli Manning in his freshman year . Coughlin opted for rookie Manning from the middle of the season . The Giants lost six of the following seven games and missed the playoffs, whereupon Coughlin was heavily criticized. The trust in Manning paid off in 2005 when the Giants reached the playoffs for the first time since 2002 with 11 wins and only 5 losses, where they lost 23-0 to the Carolina Panthers . In 2006, the Giants made it into the playoffs and lost again in the first round, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles .
The 2007 season was originally overshadowed by unrest surrounding the resignation of star running back Tiki Barber . With solid performances, especially in defense, the Giants were able to qualify as a wild card team again for the playoffs. After victories against the favored Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers , the Giants reached the Super Bowl for the first time since 2000 , in which they defeated the previously undefeated New England Patriots 17-14 on February 3, 2008 . On February 5, 2012, the New York Giants under the leadership of Coughlin could defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl XLVI with 21:17 again. After missing the play-offs with the Giants for four years in a row, he resigned as head coach at the end of the 2015 season.
Style as a trainer
Coughlin's mentor as coach was Bill Parcells , and like him, Coughlin is known as a coach who values discipline and the smallest details.
