‹ Super Bowl XXXI | Super Bowl XXXIII › |
The Super Bowl XXXII was the 32nd Super Bowl , the final of the 1997 season of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . On January 25, 1998, the Denver Broncos , the champions of the American Football Conference (AFC), defeated the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC), the Green Bay Packers , at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego , 31:24. For Super Bowl MVP was running back of the Denver Broncos, Terrell Davis , voted, in spite of an acute migraine attack 157 yards erlief and three touchdowns scored.
prehistory
The Denver Broncos had finished second behind the Kansas City Chiefs with 12: 4 wins in their division and had therefore only made it into the play-offs as a wildcard team . Head Coach Mike Shanahan's team relied on a powerful offense around 37-year-old quarterback John Elway , running back Terrell Davis and tight end Shannon Sharpe , who led the NFL with 472 points. For Denver it was the fifth Super Bowl after Super Bowl XII , Super Bowl XXI , Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXIV , the previous four were all lost (with partly clear results).
Head Coach Mike Holmgren's Green Bay Packers were defending champions, with quarterback Brett Favre the incumbent Most Valuable Player (MVP) and had finished the regular season with 13-3 wins . With 422 points they had the second best offense, the tough defense around defensive end Reggie White was especially feared for their sacks . The Packers were considered favorites: the bookmakers favored them by eleven points.

Match report
The game started optimally for the Packers, as their quarterback Brett Favre completed the first drive with a touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman (extra point kicker Ryan Longwell ; GB 7 - DEN 0). Denver then hit back through Terrell Davis , who carried the ball into the end zone after a few runs (extra point Jason Elam ; GB 7 - DEN 7). Shortly thereafter, Davis fell out with an acute migraine attack that robbed him of almost all vision. After an interception by Favre, the Broncos scored another touchdown (extra point Jason Elam; DEN 14 - GB 7), with John Elway faking a run to the almost blind Davis. After a field goal by Elam and a touchdown by the Packers tight end , Mark Chmura , (extra point Ryan Longwell) twelve seconds before the final whistle, it was 17:14 for Denver at halftime.
In the second half - Davis had his migraines under control with medication - both teams exchanged long unsuccessful attack series until Ryan Longwell equalized with a field goal to 17-17. John Elway led the Broncos to the 13-yard line and needed six yards in the 3rd down for a new series of attacks ("3rd and 6"). When Elway could not find a free man, he stormed off himself, jumped forward at the 8-yard line and was hit so hard in the air by three Packers players that he made a complete 180-degree turn like a helicopter rotor - but only landed at the 5-yard line and thus secured the new 1st down. This move, later known as the “Elways Helicopter”, was voted one of the 100 greatest sports moments of the quarter century by ESPN . Davis ran the football to the touchdown in the end zone, so that after a successful extra point from Jason Elam it was 24:17.
At the next kickoff , the Packers kick-returner Antonio Freeman was hit so hard that he lost the ball and Denver got it back in a convenient field position. Elway made an interception , and Favre led a long drive, which Freeman of all people used for a touchdown (extra point Ryan Longwell; GB 24 - DEN 24). In the fourth quarter, both teams neutralized each other until Elway led the Broncos to just before the end zone, and only 1:47 minutes were left. The Broncos were preparing their 2nd down ("2nd and goal"), and the Packers only had two timeouts . The following situation arose:
- The Broncos could now have intentionally taken the maximum time of 40 seconds for a 2nd and 3rd down in order to then shoot an almost certain field goal and only give the Packers 27 seconds for their next attack series.
- The Packers could have trusted to stop the Broncos in the 2nd and 3rd down before the end zone and then take their two timeouts. Even with an almost certain field goal against them, they would have had almost 1:47 minutes left to equalize or win with a touchdown - but would have used up all the timeouts.
- The Packers could have deliberately given the Broncos the touchdown in order to draw level with almost the entire remaining 1:47 minutes and two timeouts.
Head Coach Mike Holmgren opted for the latter, so Terrell Davis ran into the touchdown without resistance (extra point Jason Elam, DEN 31 - GB 24). But the last Packers drive got stuck, so that the Broncos won the Super Bowl for the first time.
