Michael "Mike" George Holmgren (* 15. June 1948 in San Francisco , California ) is an American American football trainer, official and former player. Most recently he served as President of the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League (NFL).

Holmgren began his career as a quarterbacks coach and later as an offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers . From 1992 to 1998 he was Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers and from 1999 to 2008 Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks . After coaching, he was President of the Cleveland Browns from 2010 to 2012 . Prior to his career in the NFL, he coached high schools and colleges.

He won with the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl XXXI with 35:21 against the New England Patriots .

Holmgren first played as a tight end and later as a quarterback at San Francisco Abraham Lincoln High School. There he was named "Prep Athlete of the Year" in 1965. He then played as a quarterback at the University of Southern California (USC). Although he worked only as a backup quarterback and got little playing time, he was supported by the then in St. Louis playing Cardinals drafted 1970th Holmgren spent time in training camp with both the Cardinals and the New York Jets , but did not play a game in the National Football League (NFL).

High school

In 1971, Holmgren began as a coach at Abraham Lincoln High School, where he was a student, and a year later he joined Sacred Heart Cathedral Prepatory as an assistant coach . He then worked from 1975 to 1980 as head coach at Oak Grove High School.

college

Holmgren became Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for the San Francisco State Gators in 1981 and then worked from 1982 to 1985 under Head Coach LaVell Edwards as Quarterbacks Coach at Brigham Young University (BYU). There he won a National Championship in 1984.

NFL

San Francisco 49ers, 1986-1991

Holmgren's first job in the NFL was as coach of the quarterbacks for the San Francisco 49ers under Head Coach Bill Walsh . There he worked with Steve Young and Joe Montana . When George Seifert replaced Bill Walsh in 1989 , Holmgren was promoted to Offensive Coordinator . He held this position until he left the 49ers in 1991.

During his time with the 49ers, they won Super Bowl XXIII and Super Bowl XXIV , and the offense he trained in 1989 was first in the entire NFL.

Green Bay Packers, 1992-1998

Holmgren was hired as head coach by the Green Bay Packers in 1992 , and in his day they had a record of 75 wins to 37 losses and competed in two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XXXI . The Packers trained by him won in five consecutive seasons (1993-1997) at least one play-off game , which before Holmgren only John Madden (1973-1997) succeeded.

Some of Holmgren's assistant coaches at the Packers later became head coaches: Andy Reid , Steve Mariucci , Dick Jauron , Ray Rhodes , Jon Gruden and Marty Mornhinweg all worked under Holmgren.

Seattle Seahawks, 1999-2008

Holmgren received an eight-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks . There he was not only active as a head coach , but also as a general manager. From the 2002 season , however, he was only active as head coach. Holmgren's record with the Seahawks was 72 wins and 56 losses, and in his first season with the Seahawks he brought them to the play-offs , after which it had never worked for the previous ten years . He also reached the Super Bowl XL in the 2005 season , in which the Seahawks were subject to the Pittsburgh Steelers . This made Holmgren only the fifth head coach to manage to play in a Super Bowl with two different franchises. The other four are Bill Parcells , Dan Reeves , Dick Vermeil, and Don Shula . At the end of the 2008 season , Holmgren left the Seahawks and ended his coaching career.

Career as president

From 2009 to 2012 Holmgren worked as President of the Cleveland Browns , but could only achieve a record of 14 wins with 34 losses and had to leave the Browns at the end of the 2012 season .

Personal

Mike Holmgren is married to Kathy and has four daughters with her. In Green Bay , Wisconsin , the Holmgren Way was named after Mike Holmgren after winning Super Bowl XXXI .
