background

Season course

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers ended their season with twelve wins and four losses. Their division, the AFC North, finished the team in first place. Within the American Football Conference , Pittsburgh was the second strongest team after the New England Patriots . With their eighth Super Bowl participation, they equalize the record of the Dallas Cowboys .

The Super Bowl XLV will be the third final for the Steelers with Ben Roethlisberger as quarterback . The team won two of them, the Super Bowl XL and the Super Bowl XLIII . The team suffered a minor setback after Roethlisberger's suspension before the start of the season. He was charged with sexually molesting a 20-year-old student. The suspension was initially six games, but was reduced to four shortly before the start of the regular season . Substitute Dennis Dixon started as the first quarterback in the first two games, then Charlie Batch took over due to injury. Overall, the Steelers were able to win three of their first four games despite the suspension of their star quarterback.

Ben Roethlisberger scored 3,200 yards in the air for 17 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions . It received an average passer rating of 97.0. In addition, he ran 176 yards for two touchdowns. Wide receiver Mike Wallace was the strongest receiver alongside Hines Ward with 60 passes caught for 1,257 yards and ten touchdowns . Running back Rashard Mendenhall gained 1,273 yards of space and 13 touchdowns, plus 23 passes caught. Rookie center Maurkice Pouncey is the only Steelers offensive player to be called up for this year's Pro Bowl .

The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense was extremely strong. The team scored the most sacks with 48 and allowed the fewest points per game (14.8). The defensive line mainly controlled the opposing running game and only allowed an average of 62.8 yards. Safety Troy Polamalu , who is considered extremely difficult to calculate, played an important role throughout the season . He forced seven interceptions and one touchdown and was elected to the Pro Bowl.

Mike Tomlin , head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is the youngest coach with two finals after this participation.

Green Bay Packers

With a record of ten wins and six defeats, Green Bay ended the regular season quite mixed. The Packers ended up in second place behind the Chicago Bears within their division and qualified as the last NFC wild card team for the play-offs. In sixth place on the seed list, Green Bay also had to compete in the wild card round and play all games away.

The season was already the third under quarterback Aaron Rodgers after the departure of longtime star Brett Favre . Rodgers threw for a total of 3,912 yards, 28 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a passer rating of 101.2. In addition, he ran 356 yards and four touchdowns, but also suffered two concussions and thereby missed 1½ games. Wide receiver Greg Jennings caught a total of 76 passes, gained 1,256 yards and recorded twelve touchdowns. Also worth mentioning is tight end Jermichael Finley , who was injured for the remainder of the season in week five, but was at the top of the team's list with 21 passes caught. The offensive line allowed significantly fewer sacks than in the bad previous season. The running game of the Green Bay Packers suffered mainly from the injury of running back Ryan Grant and only improved towards the end of the season and in the play-offs by rookie James Starks . Substitute Brandon Jackson ran 703 yards and four touchdowns. Fullback John Kuhn had six touchdowns, two of them after trapped passes.

The Packers' defense was the second best behind the Steelers with an average of 15 allowed points per game. The best players on the defensive line were Cullen Jenkins (7 sacks) and BJ Raji (6.5 sacks). Outside linebacker Clay Matthews III won the league's fourth-most sacks with 13.5 in the regular season. The two cornerbacks Tramon Williams and rookie Sam Shields played a very good season and significantly improved the previous year's poor pass defense.

Chad Clifton, Nick Collins, Greg Jennings , Clay Matthews III and Charles Woodson were elected to the Pro Bowl, Tramon Williams moved up after an injury.

Match report

The Cowboys Stadium during the Super Bowl.

Shortly after kick-off, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers managed a 29-yard touchdown throw at wide receiver Jordy Nelson: after kicker Mason Crosby kicked the extra point, it was 7-0 for Green Bay. In the next Steelers attack, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was hit in the throwing movement by Packers-Nose Tackle Howard Green , so that the short ball was intercepted by Packers-Safety Nick Collins and ran to another touchdown: after another good extra point from Crosby it was 14-0 for Green Bay. In the next drive, Roethlisberger Pittsburgh led to the opposing 16-yard line, so that kicker Shawn Suisham could kick a field goal to 14-3. Rodgers countered with a 21-yard touchdown throw to Greg Jennings (extra point Crosby successful; GB led 21-3), but just before half-time, Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward caught an 8-yard throw from Roethlisberger for a touchdown, like that that it was 21-10 after a successful extra point from Suisham.

In the third quarter, Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall ran successfully into the Green Bay end zone after a long drive (extra point Suisham successful; GB led 21-17). In the fourth quarter, the Steelers missed a chance to take the lead when Mendenhall lost the egg in a promising position and it was captured by Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop . Rodgers completed a touchdown throw on Jennings soon after, leaving Green Bay 28-17 after a successful extra point from Crosby. Steelers quarterback Roethlisberger countered with a long drive, which he completed with a 25-yard throw to wide receiver Mike Wallace . Instead of the extra point kick, Pittsburgh chose a two-point conversion , which was completed by Randle El: the Steelers were only 28-25 behind and could have drawn level with a field goal. Packers quarterback Rodgers led Green Bay to just before the end zone, so that 2:07 minutes before the end Crosby kicked a field goal for 31-25. Roethlisberger's last drive got stuck in midfield, so the Packers got the ball back after a failed fourth down and could let the clock run out.
