Bart Peterson

Barton R. "Bart" Peterson (born June 15, 1958 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American politician . He was Mayor of Indianapolis from January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2008.

He attended North Central High School before enrolling at Purdue University . He later studied law at the University of Michigan . Before he was elected mayor, he was chief of staff of Evan Bayh , the former governor of Indiana.

Peterson beat his opponent Sue Anne Gilroy with 52% of the vote, becoming the city's first Democratic Mayor since 1967. In 2003 he was re-elected with 63% of the vote. In 2007, Peterson was defeated by his Republican counterpart Greg Ballard , missing his third term.
