Michael "Mike" Pettaway Tomlin (born March 15, 1972 in Newport News , Virginia ) is an American American football coach. He has been the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL) since 2007 . Since the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII , he's the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl .

Career

Tomlin's active career was limited to high school and college football. He was active as a wide receiver and tight end . After graduating from high school, he moved to the College of William & Mary , where he was active for four years. Mike Tomlin never got into an NFL draft or played for an NFL team.

At the age of 23 he began his coaching career at the Virginia Military Institute Keydets . Two years later, Arkansas State University hired him as a coach for their defensive backs . After two more seasons, he took on the same role at the University of Cincinnati .

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made it possible for Tomlin to make the leap to the NFL in 2001 as coach of the Defensive Backs. In his five seasons as a coach, the Buccaneers were statistically the best defense twice . In 2003 the team defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII , the defense of the Buccaneers caught five interceptions for three touchdowns in this game . Three years later, the Minnesota Vikings ' new coach , Brad Childress , brought Tomlin to the Vikings as defensive coordinator .

In January 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Tomlin as their new head coach , where he replaced Bill Cowher . He was only the tenth African-American head coach of the NFL. Tomlin formed the Steelers pretty quickly, with the Steelers providing the best defense in the NFL in his first season. While he failed in the play-offs in 2007 , he reached Super Bowl XLIII with his team after the 2008 season . The Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals and named Tomlin the youngest Super Bowl winning head coach in NFL history.

Before the start of the 2010 season, Mike Tomlin extended his contract for another three years. The Steelers finished the regular season as the second best team in the American Football Conference (AFC) and moved into the Super Bowl XLV after two wins in the play-offs . Mike Tomlin became the youngest head coach in the history of the NFL with two final appearances, of which he only won the first, in Super Bowl XLV the Steelers were subject to the Green Bay Packers .

After two Super Bowl appearances in three years, Tomlin and the Steelers could no longer build on these successes. Although the playoffs were reached in 2011 and 2014-2017, each time the Steelers failed at the latest in the Divisional Round. In 2018 and 2019 the playoffs were even missed, both times the Steelers finished second in the AFC North behind the Baltimore Ravens .
