The defense allowed the opposing quarterbacks an average quarterback rating of 116.5 (worst value in the league), 1,296 passed yards (worst value in the league), 15 touchdowns (second worst value in the league) and around 5.1 rushing yards per attempt ( second worst value in the league) and allowed over 30 points three times. The 40-year-old quarterback Tom Brady finished his 18th professional season with 32 touchdowns at 4,577 yards and only eight interceptions, making him the 13th time of his career elected to the Pro Bowl. The most important addition was the wide receiver Brandin Cooks , who caught 65 passes for 1,082 yards and 7 touchdowns and was able to replace the injured Julian Edelman on an equal footing. Tight End Rob Gronkowski , who could only play eight games last season, experienced an injury-free season and ended the regular season with 69 passes caught for 1,084 yards and 8 touchdowns. The Patriots also had several solid running backs. Another option turned out to be running back James White , who caught 56 passes for 429 yards and 3 touchdowns and captured a further 171 yards in the running game. The running backs were supported by fullback James Develin , who was appointed to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. In the playoffs, the Patriots only had to compete in the Divisional Round. They secured the AFC title with a 24:20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars . In the second half at the latest, the Patriots took over the scepter. Halftime show

Justin Timberlake with the University of Minnesota Marching Band
Justin Timberlake plays I Would Die 4 U while Prince is on screen.

Justin Timberlake headlined the halftime show for the third time since 2001 (with * NSYNC ) and 2004 (with Janet Jackson ), he was supported by his band "Tennessee Kids". He sang a total of eleven songs. The highlight of the halftime show was the homage to Prince , who died in his hometown of Minneapolis in 2016: Justin Timberlake played Prince's I Would Die 4 U , with the deceased musician projected on a big screen. An aerial view showed downtown Minneapolis, covered with purple lights, transforming into Prince's trademark love symbol (a combination of Mars and Venus symbols ) with the stadium in the middle. For the first time since Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, no pyrotechnics were used during the entire halftime show. For visual effects, the show mainly relied on laser shows, lighting effects and video projections.

Justin Timberlake presented the following songs (in chronological order):

  1. Filthy
  2. Rock your body
  3. Señorita
  4. SexyBack
  5. my love
  6. Cry Me a River (with some elements from Kashmir )
  7. Suit & Tie (supported by the " University of Minnesota Marching Band ")
  8. Until the end of time
  9. I Would Die 4 U (cover version of Prince )
  10. Mirrors
  11. Can't Stop the Feeling!
