The piece was released on November 26, 1984 as the fourth single from his album Purple Rain . Prince recorded I Would Die 4 U with his then backing band The Revolution . The song can also be heard in the Prince film Purple Rain .

This song combines funk , rock and synth-pop music and was released as a single on November 26, 1984 (November 28, 1984 in the US). Like the international hit Purple Rain , this hit also made it into the top ten of the United States charts.

There is also an extended version that was used as the B-side of Erotic City . The album cover is oriented on the album cover of I Would Die 4 U . In addition to The Revolution, some musicians who accompanied Sheila E. also worked on the extended version , such as Eddie M. (saxophone) and Miko Weaver (guitar).
