Lotusflower ( stylized as Lotusflow3r ; English for lotus flower ) is the 33rd studio album by the American musician Prince , which is a triple album with his 34th studio album MPLSound ( English for sound of Minneapolis ) and the album Elixer ( English for elixir ) - sung by Bria Valente - was published. The triple album was released on March 29, 2009 on Prince's label NPG Records . Members of his former website Lotusflow3r.com were able to download the albums on March 24th . Prince had the triple album distributed not through a recording company , but through the US retail chain Target Corporation ; therefore the triple album is only available as an import outside of the US .

The music on the Lotusflow3r album is predominantly of the rock genre , MPLSound is influenced by electro funk and Elixer is influenced by R&B . Maceo Parker is a guest musician on Lotusflow3r and Q-Tip on MPLSound . Music critics rated both albums mostly positive, Elixer was judged to be very weak in some cases.

From a commercial point of view, the triple album was able to reach number two on the US hit parade, outside the US it only placed in the top 50 of France, the Netherlands and Belgium. A tour of the album played Prince.

Emergence

On November 19, 2004 Prince recorded five songs for the album Lotusflow3r in his Paisley Park Studio in Chanhassen , Minnesota, including: From the Lotus… , … Back 2 the Lotus , Colonized Mind , Love Like Jazz and Wall of Berlin . Drummer Michael Bland and bassist Sonny Thompson, who were former members of Prince's backing band The New Power Generation , will work on the five songs mentioned . The piece The Morning After , the only on the download version of Lotusflow3r exists, placed Prince originally on his album 3121 (2006), but it emphasized later from the track list.

The two songs 77 Beverly Park and 4Ever are from 2006, which Prince recorded in his villa at 77 Beverly Park in Beverly Hills while he was recording his album 3121 . On June 23, 2006, he recorded Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful at Paisley Park Studio. Three days later, Prince posted a version of the song online on his then website NPG Music Club.com, which he later revised.

In August 2008 Prince recorded the three pieces Boom , Crimson and Clover and $ on Sunset Sound in Los Angeles , California . He also added overdubs to the song Dreamer .

MPLSound is a solo project by Prince and all nine songs are from 2008. Although he released the track U're Gonna C Me in 2002 on his acoustic album One Nite Alone… , he revised this version in 2008 and placed it on MPLSound . Prince recorded all of the songs in Paisley Park Studio and played all of the instruments himself. Only with the song Chocolate Box is he supported by Q-Tip , who took on rap passages.

Nothing has been publicly known about the creation of the Elixer album .

marketing

In December 2008, Prince was busy finding a distributor for the triple album. He deliberately did not introduce himself to major labels , where he had previously had his albums Musicology (2004), 3121 (2006) and Planet Earth (2007) distributed. The bands Eagles and AC / DC , who had their albums Long Road Out of Eden (2007) and Black Ice (2008) distributed exclusively through the US retail chain Walmart , inspired Prince to introduce himself to a US retail chain, at Target Corporation . The company had CD greatest hits instance, in November 2008, Keeps Gettin 'Better - A Decade of Hits by Christina Aguilera released. The US news magazine Time wrote that retail chain artists would typically receive mid six-figure amounts for their albums, including music promotions . The news magazine did not provide exact numbers.

Prince gave a first impression of the triple album on December 17, 2008, when the Los Angeles-based local radio station Indie 103 premiered the songs Crimson and Clover , Colonized Mind , Wall of Berlin (all by Lotusflow3r ) and 4Ever by MPLSound .

In early 2009, Prince finally announced a partnership with the Minneapolis-based trading company Target Corporation. The company bought a certain number of the triple album from him and sold it exclusively in the USA. “The great thing about the cooperation is that Target treats us like any other record company. They buy the same amount and pay the same price, so we are already in perfect harmony, ”Prince said later on the Tavis Smiley Show .

Prince launched an advertising campaign and appeared three times as a musical guest on the Jay Leno Show . He also gave three live concerts, all of which took place on March 28 in Los Angeles in the three concert halls of the Nokia Theater and were attended by a total of 10,500 spectators and were therefore all sold out. Prince was also a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote his new albums.

Target Corporation finally sold the triple album on March 29, 2009 for only 11.99 US dollars, which at the time was about 8.60 euros. A tour to the triple album completed Prince; instead, he performed two sold-out concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2009 , played three concerts in Monaco , four in Paris and one concert in his Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen .

Lotusflow3r.com

On March 24, 2009 Prince's new website called Lotusflow3r.com went online . The website was created by web designer Scott Addison Clay, who later designed the websites for the Blu-ray releases of the films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2011) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), for example . Similar to the Prince website NPG-Music-Club.com in 2006, you could register as a lifelong member on Lotusflow3r.com for a one-time fee of 77 US dollars (then about 56 euros) . As a member you had the opportunity to download the triple album ; every member should also receive a t-shirt as a gift. Furthermore, could music videos and live performances are viewed by Prince. As part of the advertising campaign, Prince invited selected music journalists to his then mansion in Beverly Hills, California, to present the website to them.

The US music magazine Rolling Stone , however, pointed to a range of problems; for example, the website did not recognize some passwords and underscores in usernames , and sometimes logging in did not work even though membership had already been paid for. In addition, people from Europe were initially unable to register. I got error messages while downloading songs and music videos could only be choppy or not play at all. Rolling Stone magazine also criticized the fact that a puzzle had to be solved in order to gain access to the website. A large number of users who registered on Lotusflow3r.com did not receive the previously promised t-shirt. On March 23, 2010, the website was closed after exactly twelve months.

Book author Matt Thorne wanted to hear from Scott Addison Clay what it was like working with Prince and asked him for an interview. But Addison Clay said he had to refuse this.

Bria Valente

Bria Valente, 2006

2009 was Prince's protégé Bria Valente (born June 1, 1977 in Minneapolis , Minnesota as Brenda Fuentes), who - like Prince - grew up in Minneapolis. In 1994 she met Prince for the first time at the age of 17 when she was working with his then keyboardist Morris Hayes (born November 28, 1962) in the Paisley Park Studio. In 2001 Valente was a background dancer with Usher and later with Prince. In 2007 she took over the backing vocals on some of the Planet Earth songs . After Prince had recorded the album Elixer with Valente , he no longer worked with her.

When Prince was approached by the US magazine Ebony in June 2010 about his relationship status with Bria Valente, he replied evasively: “Self-interest is currently on hold. There is too much at stake. ”Prince was busy marketing his then current album 20Ten during this time .

Music and lyrics

Lotusflow3r

Most of the songs on the album Lotusflow3r are characterized by the use of electric guitars and can be assigned to the rock music genre, including Boom , Crimson and Clover , Colonized Mind , Wall of Berlin and $ . Dreamer in particular is sometimes reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's guitar playing . The album also features pieces from contemporary R&B , such as Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful and the R&B ballads 4Ever and Love Like Jazz . Originally, Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderfull contained arrangements by Clare Fischer , but when Prince released the song, Fischer's son Brent registered that Prince had not used anything from his father. The Morning After , which is only available on the download version of Lotusflow3r , is from the pop music genre . With From the Lotus… , … Back 2 the Lotus and 77 Beverly Park three instrumental pieces can be heard, whereby Prince named the song title 77 Beverly Park after his house in Beverly Hills , California at the time.

In the lyrics of Boom, Prince philosophizes about an alternative universe and Love Like Jazz is about the Garden of Eden . In The Morning After , Prince demands more involvement from a random affair. The lyrics of Wall of Berlin have nothing to do with the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 in a political sense, but serve Prince as a sexual metaphor ; he sings "She went down ... like the wall of Berlin." ("She went down ... like the wall of Berlin.") The piece $ is usually titled as Money , because Prince sings "Money" instead of the dollar sign . In the lyrics he criticizes the careless use of money and saxophonist Maceo Parker is a guest musician . Dreamer is about Prince's own life with a focus on his own ethnicity ; he was born in a "slave plantation" and only became aware of his race after the assassination attempt on Martin Luther King (April 4, 1968) - Prince was nine years old at the time. He also sings about the fear of police officers harassing him while he is in the car. Prince is also concerned about chemicals being sprayed on the city while he sleeps.

MPLSound

A large number of the songs Prince recorded with a drum computer and are influenced by the music genre Electro Funk , the use of synthesizers dominates. The five tracks (There'll Never B) Another Like Me , Chocolate Box , Dance 4 Me , Ol 'Skool Company and No More Candy 4 U also have a touch of hip-hop . Prince sings some of the songs mentioned in spoken chanting, singing Ol 'Skool Company with a technically accelerated, slightly higher voice, the hallmark of his alter ego "Camille". The four pieces U're Gonna C Me , Here , Valentina and Better with Time are ballads in which Prince sometimes sings in his typical falsetto .

The lyrics of Dance 4 Me are about voyeurism and those of Here are about wine, which people no longer taste as good as they used to. Prince also mentions the piece A Song for You (1971) by Donny Hathaway and thinks it is suitable for seduction . Salma Hayek's daughter named "Valentina" (* 2007) inspired Prince to write the song of the same name. Among other things, he sings, "Tell your mother to call me". In the song Better with Time , Prince describes how to age with dignity. He was inspired by the actress Kristin Scott Thomas , who plays the leading female role in the film Under the Cherry Moon (1986).

According to Prince, he celebrates his hometown Minneapolis in the lyrics of Ol 'Skool Company and praises the music that comes from there. In No More Candy 4 U, he gets upset about internet trolls with a wink, and Prince expresses his contempt for - in his opinion - talent-free people who only achieved notoriety through the media.

Elixers

The music and lyrics for the Elixer album were written exclusively by Prince. The songs are influenced by the contemporary R&B genre and are sometimes reminiscent of Sade Adu's . Prince himself described the music as "bad, but not mean". About the lyrics, he said that Bria Valente did not encourage promiscuity , but sang "about her lover who could be her partner for life."

In the lyrics of Here Eye Come, Valente fantasizes about being the “indecent blonde girl” from the film 9½ weeks during the shower scene. All This Love is about obsession and in the song Something U Already Know she sings about making love on a rocking horse . Everytime is a ballad, while 2nite is dominated by house and disco . In the lyrics, Valente celebrates attractive people who dance. Prince originally recorded the track Kept Woman for Támar Davis and placed it on her album Milk & Honey in 2006 , which was not released. He later revised the song and sent it to Valente. The lyrics to Immersion are about an alternate universe beyond space and time. The title song Elixer is again a ballad and a duet between Valente and Prince.

Moreover appeared MPLSound as a separate CD, but also under the name Lotusflow3r sold what conscious marketing strategy is and was not a mistake. Furthermore, Lotusflow3r and MPLSound were released in France in November 2009 as a double album on record , and MPLSound as a single record. Elixer has not been released as a record and outside of the US and France the triple album is only available as an import .

Single releases

From the triple album, three singles were released; Another Boy by Elixer was released on September 30, 2008 - on the same day Prince's live CD Indigo Nights was released - six months before the release of the triple album as a download . There is another misprint on the cover ; there you can read that Another Boy will appear on the album Elix i r instead of Elix e r . Music promotion was not carried out for Another Boy .

The second single was released on August 31, 2009, Dance 4 Me by MPLSound . The song was only available as a download in France, a week before the album was released there. A remix version was then released on September 29th via the iTunes Store in North America . Both versions were distributed by the independent label Because Music. On December 9, 2011, Dance 4 Me was finally released as a compact disc , including the remix versions. This time the Swiss independent label Purple Music was responsible for distribution. Dance 4 Me is also available as a 12 "vinyl record and a 12" picture disc . Furthermore, in October 2009, the song appeared U're Gonna C Me of MPLSound as a promotional single on CD in a shortened to 3:33 minutes radio edit version.

On February 23, 2012, three years after the release date of the triple album , the song 2nite was released by Elixer as a download on the independent label Purple Music. The piece was released in various remix versions and is available for purchase on CD, 12 "vinyl record and 12" picture disc.

All singles could not place in international charts.

Music videos

Prince produced music videos for three songs from the triple album ; In the video for Crimson and Clover , he sings the song and plays the guitar. The color scheme of the video is a creation of psychedelic art . Misty Copeland is the dancer and the director was PR Brown.

The music video for Chocolate Box is a futuristic and animated video that takes place exclusively at night and in the framework of which a man chases a woman above the roofs of a high-rise building in an imaginary city. These hunting scenes are sometimes reminiscent of film scenes from Matrix . Both people wear black coats , with the man's lining being purple and the woman's being red. When the man finally reaches the woman, the couple jump in the air and bump their chests against each other. When they hit each other, lightning flashes and Prince's face appears in a purple crystal ball . The couple then dance capoeira style to challenge each other. In the final scene of the video, the woman reaches for the man's necklace and the two seem to unite by holding hands. During this framework, Prince is permanently shown singing the song Chocolate Box on the large screens of high-rise buildings. In addition, a floating futuristic zeppelin can be seen, on the outer skin of which a large screen is also installed and shows a video in which Prince continues to perform the song. This Zeppelin element is sometimes reminiscent of film scenes from Blade Runner . The rapper Q-Tip does not appear in the music video. The director was again PR Brown, who implemented Prince's ideas of how he would be portrayed in the music video.

There is also a promotional music video for Everytime , sung by Bria Valente. Prince does not appear in this video.

reception

There are mainly reviews of the triple album from the USA, as there was little foreign media interest in the import album. Most music critics rated the triple album not as a whole, but rated the three albums separately. In this Lotusflow3r and MPLSound praised mainly, Elixer , however, was classified as weak.

Lotusflow3r

Margaret Wappler from the national daily Los Angeles Times praised Lotusflow3r and gave it three out of four stars. She wrote that it "is the work of a musician who is still curious after all these years." The blog LAist noted that Lotusflow3r had "a slight hint of psychedelic rock , coupled with a large amount of distorted guitar playing".

Nate Chinen of the national daily newspaper The New York Times said that Lotusflow3r was the best of the three albums; For example, Prince has the gift of comparing his cover version of Crimson and Clover by Tommy James & the Shondells with Jimi Hendrix and Velvet Underground . The album also has strong hooks . The New York Times named the triple album "Critics' Choice".

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic gave three and a half stars out of five. He said that on Lotusflow3r there are “great moments” but not “great songs”. He praised the song Dreamer and drew a comparison with Jimi Hendrix . But apart from that, "the album is as smooth as Elixer ". He did not comment on the MPLSound album .

Gavin Edwards of the American music magazine Rolling Stone described the triple album as "at times excellent" and - in reference to the low price of 11.99 US dollars - as "a real bargain". On Lotusflow3r , Prince presents "his long underrated guitar playing". The disadvantage of the album is that when Prince can't be heard on guitar, the music sounds strangely muffled. He gave three stars out of five.

After Prince's death in April 2016, the music journalists Albert Koch and Thomas Weiland from the German music magazine Musikexpress reviewed the album Lotusflow3r and gave it three and a half out of six stars. They wrote that although the album contained “with Dreamer an approximation of the sound of Jimi Hendrix, but also too much musician noodle”.

MPLSound

Steve Jones from USA Today praised the album and gave it three out of four stars. On MPLSound , Prince would “ take up the synthesizer mood of the 1980s with his oversized intact ego ”.

Gavin Edwards gave MPLSound three and a half stars out of five. He found that although Prince had played every instrument on the album himself, this time he only did this with the compulsive help of Pro Tools . In his opinion, five of the nine songs sounded like lost B-sides from Prince's world-class albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981) and 1999 (1982). Today (2009) a good Prince song would usually remind the listener of an earlier song that was better than him.

Margaret Wappler of the Los Angeles Times gave two and a half stars out of four; she felt that MPLSound lacked "the feeling of genuine lustful sin".

Elixers

Gavin Edwards only gave Elixer two stars and said that most of the songs were harmless pop ballads. Bria Valente has "a pleasant, if somewhat thin voice". The only really good song is the dance-pop title 2nite . Nate Chinen was of a similar opinion and wrote that Elixer contained insignificant R&B songs. Jon Bream from the national US daily Star Tribune was also disappointed and said that Prince had only produced Elixer “as a favor for a friend” and that the album was “to be thrown away”. Margaret Wappler gave the album two stars out of four. The main problem is that not enough songs sound “strong and fresh”.

Leah Greenblatt of the weekly US American magazine Entertainment Weekly was less than enthusiastic about the triple album and described it as "the most disappointing Prince albums in years". You forgave on a scale of A + to F the note C . The Boston Globe newspaper had a similar point of view and took the view that the triple album should have been reduced to a total of one album. On the other hand, Jörg Michael Schmitt from the German-language website SonicSoul.com summed up that the triple album was “not a cultural revolution, but always a motley fun affair”.
