Girl 6 ( English for girl 6 ) is a music album that consists exclusively of compositions by the musician Prince . It was released on March 19, 1996 on the major label Warner Bros. Records and serves as the soundtrack for the film of the same name by director Spike Lee . Aside from Prince, The Family , The New Power Generation and Vanity also played on the album .

Only three of the total of 13 songs by Girl 6 were previously unreleased and the music on the album belongs to the genres R&B , dance , electro funk , funk , pop and rock . Neither Prince nor Warner Bros. Records did any noteworthy music promotion for Girl 6 ; it could not achieve gold or platinum status internationally. Music critics rated the album consistently positive.

Emergence

Due to differences with Warner Bros. Records, Prince dropped his stage name in 1993 and instead carried an unpronounceable symbol as a pseudonym . But the album cover of Girl 6 says “Songs by Prince”, which is why some people thought he had taken his original name “Prince” again. Only a press release from the musician made it clear that all songs on the album Girl 6 had already been recorded before its name change. But this claim can be proven to be refuted, because the two songs Count the Days and Girl 6 were recorded in 1994 and 1995. The three songs Don't Talk 2 Strangers , Girl 6 and She Spoke 2 Me were previously unreleased.

The two songs Nasty Girl and How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? date from 1982; Nasty Girl recorded Prince in his then home studio called Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen , Minnesota, in late March 1982 . Although he gave the credits to the band The Time , but they did not participate in the recordings. The piece How Come U Do not Call Me Anymore? Prince recorded on April 26, 1982 at Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles , California.

Erotic City recorded Prince on March 25, 1984, also at the Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles. Although the song is attributed to Prince and The Revolution , only he and Sheila E. worked on the song, who did the backing vocals . Prince played the song The Screams of Passion on August 18, 1984 at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse Studio in Eden Prairie , Minnesota. He attributed the credits to lead singer St. Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin , who jointly did the lead vocals. In addition, added Clare Fischer Orchestra - overdubs added. The piece Girls & Boys took Prince on July 8, 1985 Washington Avenue Warehouse Studio in Eden Prairie on.

The Cross recorded Prince on July 13, 1986 at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and Hot Thing on August 6, 1986 at his then home studio Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen. He recorded Adore on November 19, 1986 in Sunset Sound and Pink Cashmere recorded Prince on June 9, 1988 in his Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen.

She Spoke 2 Me was recorded during the Love Symbol album recordings in October 1991 at Paisley Park Studio. Don't Talk 2 Strangers recorded Prince during his Diamonds and Pearls tour in Melbourne in mid-April 1992 at Platinum Studios. The song originally served as the soundtrack for the film, Go Here To Hollywood? (Original title: I'll Do Anything ) from 1994 by film director James L. Brooks , who ultimately turned down Don't Talk 2 Strangers .

The two songs Count the Days and Girl 6 recorded Prince after his name change in 1993; He played Count the Days with The New Power Generation on May 15, 1994 at Paisley Park Studio, while Girl 6 is the only song that Prince recorded specifically for the album of the same name. After Tommy Barbarella - keyboardist in Prince's then backing band of The New Power Generation - recorded the piece in his own home studio in Minneapolis , Minnesota, Prince reworked it in December 1995 at Paisley Park Studio. Nona Gaye took over the backing vocals. Although Prince had changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol two and a half years earlier, Girl 6 credits are attributed to "Prince".

Design of the cover

Theresa Randle , the leading actress in the film Girl 6, is shown on the front cover . In addition, the note “Songs by Prince” should be read. The booklet is designed as a fold-out cover and consists of three pages with photos of actors from the film. Information about the songs is printed on the inside cover and film scenes from Girl 6 can be seen on the back cover . Director Spike Lee also thanks Prince, whom he addresses with "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince". According to Lee, he "made a huge sacrifice" to "make" the album happen.

The lyrics of the individual songs are not printed in the booklet and on the front of the cover you can read the warning “ Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics ” (German: “Note for parents - too clear lyrics”).

music

The music on the album belongs to the genres R&B , dance , electro funk , funk and pop . The lyrics sings Prince predominantly melodic set to music , in his characteristic falsetto -Gesang he can be heard as well. The lyrics are mostly about sex and lust .

With Count the Days and Girl 6 , The New Power Generation will perform two songs , with bassist Sonny Thompson taking over the lead vocals in Count the Days . The relaxed doo-wop song is shaped by Prince's acoustic guitar playing . Girl 6 belongs to the dance-pop genre and contains samples of film quotes from the film of the same name. Prince also took samples from his own songs Raspberry Beret (1985) and Housequake (1987) and Nona Gaye can be heard in the backing vocals .

Nasty Girl is performed by Vanity 6 , with lead singer Vanity doing the lead vocals. The song comes from the electronic pop genre and the lewd lyrics are about a sex-obsessed woman who initiates an anonymous sex encounter with a man she had only met once before. Among other things, Vanity sings that she needs “18 centimeters or more”. The girl group Vanity 6 was a musical side project of Prince in 1982, which consisted of the trio Vanity (* 1959, † 2016), Brenda Bennett (* January 24, 1962) and Susan Moonsie (* January 21, 1964).

The Screams of Passion is from the field of pop music and is sung by The Family, Prince's side project at the time in 1985. The Family sings the original version of Nothing Compares 2 U , among others . The piece Don't Talk 2 Strangers is a ballad that Prince sings in falsetto.

The track Pink Cashmere appeared in September 1993 on the Prince compilation The Hits / The B-Sides , and the song Count the Days was to be found in March 1995 on the second studio album called Exodus by The New Power Generation .

The CD single was only released in Europe and, apart from the clean edit version, also contains the album version and the track New Power Soul , which is also on the The New Power Generation's second studio album Exodus can be found. New Power Soul recorded Prince with his backing band.

Music videos

No music video has been produced for the song Girl 6 , but there are videos for the other five singles; the one about Nasty Girl only shows an appearance of the girl group Vanity 6 singing the song in a studio. The family's music video for The Screams of Passion was also recorded in a studio, but using bluescreen technology it gives the impression that the band is performing the song on a beach and sometimes standing in the water.

The video for Girls & Boys consists mainly of a scene from the film Under the Cherry Moon (1986), in which Prince and The Revolution perform the song. The additional added scenes were shot during the filming of Prince film and director of the music video was the musicians themselves. Pink Cashmere consists of a compilation of previous Prince videos.

In the video for Count the Days you can see the members of the then cast of The New Power Generation . Prince also plays the acoustic guitar, although his face is veiled with a scarf and the words "The Exodus Has Begun" (German: "The escape has begun"). The music video mainly consists of reports from the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) and shows Martin Luther King and the Edmund Pettus Bridge, among others.

Cover versions

Chaka Khan recorded a cover version of Don't Talk 2 Strangers and released it on September 29, 1998 on their Prince-produced album Come 2 My House . Three years after the release of the album Girl 6 , Prince released the song She Spoke 2 Me in a remix version on his album The Vault… Old Friends 4 Sale in August 1999. He recorded the remix version in October 1991.

Allegations of plagiarism

It wasn't until November 23, 2007, that James Brandon, music manager for a band called GOMAB, filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Prince for copyright infringement. Brandon thinks the song Girl 6 is a plagiarism of a GOMAB track recorded in 1993 called Phone Sex . In March 1994 he gave a demo tape of the song to Clarence B. Lee and asked him to forward it to his nephew Spike Lee . Apart from Prince, the lawsuit is also directed against Spike Lee and his production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, as well as against 20th Century Studios and Warner Bros. Entertainment . In addition, various media are sued for the exploitation and distribution of the soundtrack and the use of the song Girl 6 in the film of the same name; The New Power Generation and keyboardist Tommy Barbarella, who is named as co-author of the song, are also affected by the lawsuit.

In 1996, Brandon hired a lawyer to compile the necessary documents and information for a corresponding lawsuit. But at that time he did not have the financial means to bring the lawsuit to court. It wasn't until 2007 that Brandon filed the lawsuit in Barbados because he was living there at the time. However, since April 2020 the US District Court has jurisdiction for the southern district of New York (state) . A legally valid decision has not yet been made (as of August 2020).

reception

Press

Neither Warner Bros. Records nor Prince organized any noteworthy music promotions for Girl 6, and Prince did not tour the album. In addition, the mass media showed little interest in the album.

Jason Draper, author of several Prince books, wrote in his book Chaos, Disorder, And Revolution (2011); Music critics "who really went to the trouble of reviewing Girl 6 " rated the album "pretty positive" and were convinced of the "mixture of old and new songs".

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic was enthusiastic about the album and awarded four and a half stars out of five. In his opinion, all songs have “funky keyboards” or are “smooth and gentle soul ballads”. Only the two songs Count the Days and Girl 6 by The New Power Generation "weaken a bit compared to the other tracks". Nevertheless, the album is "a good record" and "ideal for those who long for Prince's heyday in the mid-1980s".

Omoronke Idowu from the US magazine Vibe particularly praised the songs Erotic City and Girl 6 . The "only disappointment" is only the track Don't Talk 2 Strangers . In conclusion, Idowu wrote that if you have never dealt with the “Artist Formerly Known As Prince”, the album is “a perfect introduction to his highly esteemed oeuvre ”.
