Anthology: 1995–2010 ( English for anthology : 1995–2010 ) is the seventh compilation album by the American musician Prince and the second to be published posthumously . It was released on August 17, 2018 by the music label NPG Records / Legacy Recordings and is only available as a download . The compilation includes 37 songs that were originally released between 1995 and 2010.
The music on the album belongs to the genres of contemporary R&B , funk , pop music , rock music and soul . Guest musicians include Angie Stone , Ani DiFranco , Candy Dulfer , Christian Scott , Clare Fischer , Larry Graham , Nona Gaye , Rosie Gaines and Susannah Melvoin . NPG Records / Legacy Recordings did not organize any noteworthy music promotion for Anthology: 1995–2010 ; it could not achieve gold or platinum status internationally.
There was little mass media interest in the album, but music critics rated the album very positively.
Emergence
When Prince died unexpectedly in April 2016, he left no will that could regulate the copyrights of his written songs. By court order , his sister and his five living half-siblings have been designated as heirs, who signed a lawyer contract with Sony Music Entertainment in June 2018 . This contract means that Sony - under the music label Legacy Recording - received the rights to 19 albums that Prince released between 1995 and 2010. Nothing has been publicly known about the purchase price.
Ten songs from Anthology: 1995–2010 Prince had already recorded before 1995; He recorded Dream Factory in December 1985, Crucial in September 1986, Strays of the World in May 1993 and Chaos and Disorder in October 1993. The six tracks Endorphinmachine , Eye Hate U , Gold , P. Control , Shhh and We March from the album He recorded The Gold Experience from June 1992 to July 1994. The songs mentioned ten had not published Prince at the time, but only starting in 1995. The recorded at spätesten song by Anthology: 1995-2010 is Future Soul Song , the Prince turned completed in November 2009 and 2010 on his album 20th -placed .
The commercially successful song The Most Beautiful Girl in the World , which was originally released as a single in 1994, but was also placed on the 1995 album The Gold Experience , is not available on Anthology: 1995-2010 . This could be due to possible copyright infringements because Prince lost a plagiarism case against two Italian songwriters in 2015 . According to the final court ruling, The Most Beautiful in the World may not be distributed in Italy until further notice. The final situation has not yet been clarified (as of 2020), as Prince died on April 21, 2016.

reception
Press
Although the album was Anthology: 1995-2010 in various online - mass media mentioned, but reviews are just to find a few. The coverage mainly focused on the fact that since August 2018, over 300 Prince songs can be downloaded from the Internet or listened to on streaming services.
Will Hermes from the US music magazine Rolling Stone praised the album and gave it four out of five stars. He wrote that the 37 songs “cover an amazing spectrum”; “Pop gems, piano ballads” and “fire-breathing jazz fusion instrumentals” can be heard. Prince did not follow music trends in his career and "many highlights" of Anthology: 1995-2010 are tributes to his musical ancestors. For example, The Work Part 1 (2001) is an homage to James Brown , U're Gonna C Me (2002) to Joni Mitchell , Northside (2004) to Sly Stone and Dreamer (2009) to Jimi Hendrix . The song P. Control sounds “still so brilliant”, as if it hadn't even been released in 1995. In addition, songs were selected that had influenced other musicians; Pieces like Eye Hate U (1995), Shhh (1995), The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (1999), Muse 2 the Pharaoh (2001) and Call My Name (2004) inspired neo-soul musicians like D'Angelo , and tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington "undoubtedly" "noticed" the piece West (2003). Chelsea Rodgers (2007) is "a secret weapon among certain club DJs ".
Hermes complained that on Anthology: 1995-2010 no cover versions of Prince can be heard; the songs he interpreted Betcha by Golly Wow! and La, La, La, Means Eye Love U , both found on Emancipation (1996) and originally written by Thom Bell , were among Prince's "greatest moments of the past few days." In addition, the songs lacked Everyday is a Winding Road , the on Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (1999) can be heard and Sheryl Crow was written, as well as "the jewel" So Far, So Pleased (1999), a book written by him duet with Gwen Stefani . Hermes concluded that one could be happy that Prince had left enough songs for the next few years.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic also gave four out of five stars and said among other things: "Frankly, this type of compilation was urgently needed". Anthology: 1995–2010 offers an opportunity to “navigate” Prince's extensive music catalog from this period. Above all, the compilation shows how Prince returns "to his soul", which he "used as the main source" during his "glory days" in the 1980s. The songs not only underline his musical versatility, but also “his craftsmanship”, which “never let him down”.
