Neo-soul
Neo-soul is a sub-genre of soul music that was developed in the mid-1990s and reached its greatest popularity in the early 2000s. The artists of the genre set themselves apart from modern R&B (such as hip-hop soul ) and were therefore rarely able to celebrate commercial success. They refer to the original soul music of the 1970s, for example by Stevie Wonder , Marvin Gaye or Donny Hathaway , in that they mostly write their texts and often the music themselves and set them to music with mainly live instruments . Most of the time, however, hip-hop elements are also used in a subtle way .
Brown Sugar (1995) by D'Angelo is often referred to as one of the first neo-soul albums, although it was still influenced by hip-hop soul. One of the highlights of the genre is the album Baduizm (1997) by Erykah Badu . D'Angelo and Badu were both signed to the record label of former Motown President Kedar Massenburg . The term “Neo Soul” goes back to him. The musician collective Soulquarians , founded by Questlove , D'Angelo, J Dilla and James Poyser , made a significant contribution to increasing the awareness of Neo Soul. J Dilla's influence on the genre since his collaboration on Beats, Rhymes and Life (1996) for A Tribe Called Quest was particularly formative, and he is occasionally even mentioned as the founder of neo-soul. DJ Jazzy Jeff also played an important role in the development of the genre with his production company A Touch of Jazz .
Other important representatives of Neo-Soul include Joi , The Roots , Maxwell , Eric Benét , Raphael Saadiq , Lauryn Hill , Musiq , Bilal , Angie Stone , Jill Scott , Alicia Keys , India.Arie , Dwele , John Legend , Raheem DeVaughn and Lynden David Hall .
