Raphael Saadiq
Raphael Saadiq (born May 14, 1966 in Oakland , California ; actually Charles Raphael (Charlie Ray) Wiggins ) is an American musician, singer and songwriter . He is considered one of the pioneers and essential producers of neo-soul .
life and career
At the age of six, Charlie Wiggins was already drawing attention to himself as a bassist for the local gospel choir (not yet as a singer). Smaller local appearances followed, before he got the unique chance after graduating from high school in 1984 to go on a world tour as bassist with Prince and Sheila E.
At the end of the 80s he founded the R&B / soul trio Tony with his brother D'Wayne Wiggins and his cousin Timothy Riley ! Toni! Toné! . Their first album, Who? , achieved gold status in the US, but met with little commercial success outside of the US market. The group only achieved its global breakthrough in 1993 with their third album, Sons of Soul , which sold more than three million units and was awarded a Grammy nomination. After the release of the album House of Music (1996), the band members parted ways. Charlie changes his maiden name Wiggins to Raphael Saadiq. Attempts to distinguish yourself as a solo artist are quickly rejected. In 1999 he founded the neo-soul group Lucy Pearl with the singer Dawn Robinson ( En Vogue ) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad ( A Tribe Called Quest ) . With hits like Dance Tonight they celebrate great success together, but after only one album the group disbanded. In the following years Saadiq is mainly active as a producer; so he supports artists like D'Angelo , The Roots , Macy Gray , TLC , Kelis , Joss Stone or John Legend with his talent. In 2002 he founded his record label Pookie Entertainment , through which he released his first solo album, Instant Vintage , in over 15 years . The record turned out to be a huge success, earning him an impressive five Grammy nominations. He finally received Grammys as the author of big hit singles with D'Angelo ( Untitled / How Does It Feel ) & Erykah Badu ( Love of My Life (An Ode to HipHop) ). The second solo album As Ray Ray was released in 2004, The Way I See It followed in 2009, and Stone Rollin 'in 2011 .
