biography

youth

As a child, Kelis sang in the church choir and received lessons on the violin , piano and saxophone at a private school. During her school days she was a member of the R&B group BLU . After graduating, Kelis formed a band with the Neptunes . This also helped her to get a record deal as a solo artist.

Career

In 1999 Kelis' first album Kaleidoscope was released . The album produced by the Neptunes developed internationally (with the exception of the USA) to a great commercial success, driven by single releases "Caught Out There", "Good Stuff" and "Get Along With You". Two years later, Wanderland was followed by their second album, which was only released in Europe and Asia and with "Young, Fresh 'n' New" only produced one single, moderately successful single.

In the United States, however, Kelis was best known for collaborating with a variety of different artists, including the tracks "Got Your Money" with Ol 'Dirty Bastard and "What It Is" with Busta Rhymes . It was only with her third album Tasty , which was released in 2003, that Kelis also achieved her breakthrough as a solo artist. The single "Milkshake" reached number 1 on the R&B charts and number 3 on the American Billboard charts. Similar to the subsequent releases “Trick Me” and “Millionaire” (in a duet with André 3000 ), it was also able to place itself at the top of the charts in Europe.

In August 2006 Kelis' fourth studio album Kelis Was Here was released , for whose productions artists such as Will.i.am , Cee-Lo Green and Scott Storch were responsible. The album's first single, "Bossy," a collaboration with rapper Too Short , reached number 16 on the US Billboard charts. The second single was titled "Blindfold Me" and was created in collaboration with her husband and rapper Nas , whom she married on January 8, 2005. The third single "Lil 'Star" was released in 2007 abroad.

In April 2009, despite being seven months pregnant, she filed for divorce from Nas due to irreconcilable differences. Their son Knight was born in New York on July 22, 2009. The divorce from Nas was consummated on May 29, 2010.

Her fifth studio album, Flesh Tone, was released in Europe and Asia in May 2010 and in the US in July. The album's first single, "Acapella," debuted at number 5 in the UK and reached number 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs and UK Dance Charts. The second single, "4th of July (Fireworks)", was a club hit in America and the UK. The subsequent releases "Scream" and "Brave" were less successful. In mid-2010 Kelis began her first US tour entitled All Hearts with Robyn .

A single called "Distance" was released in 2012.

In January 2020, Kelis took part in the first season of the British version of The Masked Singer as Daisy and was eliminated in the fifth episode in eighth place.
