Ticker symbol
A ticker symbol is mostly an abbreviation used to denote a publicly traded company in the United States. This symbol consists of 1–4 letters depending on the type of exchange and the importance of the company.
For example, the letter F is reserved for the Ford company. Basically all abbreviations with 1–3 letters represent the NYSE , while those with 4 letters are listed on NASDAQ .
In Germany, on the other hand, the 6-digit securities identification number (WKN) or, from 2000, the twelve-digit international securities identification number (ISIN) is used.
