Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill (born May 25, 1975 in South Orange , New Jersey ) is an American singer , rapper , songwriter and actress . She was best known as the lead singer of hip-hop - band Fugees and as a first fivefold Grammy -Gewinnerin in 1999th
Career
Lauryn Hill founded the band Fugees in 1988 with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel . She also worked as an actress (e.g. Sister Act 2 - In Divine Mission with Whoopie Goldberg ) and studied history at Columbia High School. The first Fugees album Blunted on Reality was not a commercial success despite excellent reviews. The second album, The Score (1996), sold 17 million copies and was awarded multiple platinum records and two Grammy Awards . The album also included a cover version of Killing Me Softly , which stayed at number 1 on the German music charts for nine weeks. This success made all three members of the Fugees international stars.
In 1998 Lauryn Hill released her first solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , which became a huge hit worldwide. It also contained Doo Wop (That Thing) , which was released as a single. In 1999 she was nominated for eleven Grammy Awards for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and she was the first female artist to win in five categories ( Album of the Year , Best New Artist , Best Female R&B Vocal Performance , Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album ) . The title of the album is derived from Carter G. Woodson's book The Miseducation Of The Negro . In 1999 she received the Kora All African Music Award in the Diaspora category . In 2002 an unplugged album was released, on which Hill introduced several new songs to the acoustic guitar and without an accompanying musician, which were never released as a studio version. In 2003 she made headlines when she sharply criticized the clergy in a speech before her performance at the Christmas concert in the Vatican .
In 2012 she went on tour again after a long break. The reviews of some of their appearances, e.g. B. their concert in the Berlin Tempodrom, were marked by the disappointment with their fragile voice, which could not reach the level of earlier years, but also with the poor sound mix on site. When Hill's voice failed with the first songs, many viewers acknowledged their performance with boos and left the event prematurely.
Personal
Lauryn Hill has five children with her long-time partner, former American football player and current musician Rohan Marley , a son of the late reggae musician Bob Marley . Their sixth child has a different father, according to Rohan Marley.
In 2013, Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in jail for tax evasion after failing to pay tax on income of $ 1.8 million between 2005 and 2007. A court in Newark , New Jersey, ordered an additional three months of house arrest. Hill pleaded guilty.
