South Orange is a city in Essex County , New Jersey , United States . In the 2010 census , the population was 16,198.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 7.4 km² , not including water bodies.
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 16,964 people, 5,522 households and 3,766 families in the city. The population density is 2,298.2 inhabitants per km². 60.41% of the population is White, 31.30% African American , 0.09% Native American , 3.89% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.57% Other Ethnicity, and 2.71% Mixed Race . 4.93% are Latinos of any race.
33.8% of the 5,522 households have children under the age of 18. 55.2% of these are married couples living together, 10.0% are single mothers, 31.8% are not families, 25.2% are single households and 9.8% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 69, the average family size 3.26.
