Seton Hall University is a private Roman Catholic university in South Orange , New Jersey .
history
It was founded in 1856 by Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley and is the oldest diocesan university in the United States. It is also the oldest and largest Catholic university in the US state of New Jersey . The university is known for its programs in economics , education , law , nursing , theology, and diplomacy . The university was named after Bayley's aunt, Elisabeth Anna Bayley Seton .
The university has 5,200 undergraduate and approximately 4,500 graduate students. The law school, one of the most important law schools in the United States, has approximately 1,200 students. Seton Hall University is also the former home of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey , which was acquired by the state in 1965 .
