The William Paterson University of New Jersey is a public university in Wayne Township , New Jersey .

It was founded in New Jersey in 1855 to train teachers and moved to its current campus in 1951 on a former farm or summer retreat of the Hobart family (hence the name of the Hobart Manor, built in 1877, where the president of the university has his office) Family of former US Vice President Garret Hobart . It was then called Paterson State Teachers College, but expanded its curriculum in 1966 to include additional degrees and in 1971 changed its name to William Paterson University.

It is named after William Paterson , former Governor and Senator of New Jersey and a member of the Supreme Court. The university is located in a wooded, hilly area near Paterson .

In addition to the humanities, the training focuses on medicine and business administration. Among other things, they also train in popular music and jazz. The university has its own radio station, WPSC-FM.

In 2010 it had about 11,000 students.
