The Drew University is a private university in Madison in the US state of New Jersey . In 2013 almost 2,400 students were enrolled. With annual tuition fees of $ 54,000, it is the most expensive university in the state.

history

In 1832, William Gibbons, owner of a steamboat operation, acquired an area of around 460,000 square feet in Madison and named it The Forest . In 1867, the banker Daniel Drew bought this land for $ 140,000 and donated it to the Methodist Church to establish a Methodist Theological College. The Gibbons Mansion , previously built by Gibbons, was named after Drew's wife Roxanna Mead Mead Hall . During a Methodist centenary, Drew persuaded various members of the Church to help build and develop the college. He was able to win the theologian John McClintock as the first president of the university. Since the first students were accepted in the same year, the theological college was the third oldest Methodist college within the Evangelical Methodist Church . As a result, the well-known theologian James Strong became a professor at the college.

Graduates have been able to do a doctorate at the university since 1912. With the establishment of the "College of Missions" in 1920, courses and seminars for women were offered for the first time. In 1928 the university accepted a $ 1.5 million donation from brothers Arthur and Leonard Baldwin to help establish a humanities faculty. After its establishment, it was named "Brothers College" in honor of the brothers. Shortly thereafter, the college took on the current name "Drew University". From 1942 onwards, the Brothers College also accepted women in its courses, as the number of male students threatened to decimate considerably as a result of the Second World War . In 1955 the graduate school was founded.

In 1984, Professors Philip Jensen and Richard Detweiler initiated the "Computer Initiative", through which every student received their own computer and the necessary software. Drew University was the first humanities university to offer this. In 1990, former Governor Thomas Kean became the university's tenth president. After a donation of 5 million euros from the banker Finn MW Caspersen , the previous graduate school was renamed "Caspersen School of Graduate Studies" in 1999. During his 15-year tenure, Kean raised the profile of the university. He tripled the funding and established new faculties of African Studies , Asian Studies , Russian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies .

In 2015, retired biochemist William C. Campbell , a Rice Fellow at Drew University, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine .
