Udo Becker ( Udo Jürgen Becker; born August 13, 1957 in Schwenningen ) is professor and holder of the chair for traffic ecology at the Institute for Traffic Planning and Road Traffic at the Faculty of Traffic Sciences "Friedrich List" at the Technical University of Dresden . In addition to Jochen Eckart at the HS Karlsruhe , he holds one of two professorships for traffic ecology in Germany.

Life

Becker studied industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe from 1977 to 1983 . After graduating, he spent an academic year at Ohio State University . During his work as a research assistant at the Institute for Transport at the TH Karlsruhe (1984–1990) , Becker obtained his doctorate in engineering in 1988 on the subject of observing road traffic from an airplane .

From 1990 to 1994 he worked as a project manager in the transport department for Prognos AG. Between 1992 and 1999, Becker was also a lecturer in transport economics at the Economic Science Center at the University of Basel .

He was the Chair of Transport Ecology to Dresden in early 1994 called , still the world's only chair for this subject area. The professorship distinguishes between two main research areas in traffic ecology:

  • Short-term / local - Direct effects of transport on the environment: measuring methods, tools and models for energy consumption , exhaust, pollution and CO 2 - emissions , noise , land use , soil and water pollution , etc.
  • Long-term / global - fundamentals of traffic and indirect effects: Sustainability in traffic (sustainable mobility), load capacity limits , long-term orientation and changeability of our traffic systems and behavior, traffic- generating factors, traffic-induced traffic, supply and demand influences, external and internal costs, local agendas. "

In 1996 he was one of the founding members of the Dresden Institute for Transport and Environment (DIVU), a registered association on whose board he is currently a member. Becker is considered a staunch opponent of the construction of the Waldschlößchenbrücke and was active as an expert for the Green League of Saxony in the planning approval procedure .

Becker is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Transport Club .

Udo Becker is married and has five children.
