Joel Silver
Joel Silver (born July 14, 1952 in South Orange ) is an American film producer . He became known through action-packed Hollywood blockbusters like Predator , Die Hard , the Lethal Weapon series and the Matrix trilogy.
Life and career
Silver grew up in his native South Orange , New Jersey . He attended Columbia High School in Maplewood , where he distinguished himself primarily through co-inventing the ultimate frisbee sport . In 1970 he enrolled at Lafayette College , later he attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University .
His first job was at Lawrence Gordon Pictures, where he made his debut as a producer with the 1979 action film The Warriors . He quickly rose to the position of president of the company's film division, followed by films such as Just 48 Hours and Streets of Fire .
In 1985 he founded his own company, Silver Pictures, with which he made a production deal with 20th Century Fox and later with Warner Brothers . He has produced a number of successful blockbusters , including the Lethal Weapon series, the first two Die Hard films, and later the hugely successful Matrix trilogy.
Joel Silver is widely recognized for working with Jerry Bruckheimer to breathe new life into the action genre in the 1980s and take it to whole new heights. Just like Bruckheimer, Silver is often criticized for the superficial plot of his films. He parodied his own image in the animated comedy Wrong Game with Roger Rabbit as a frustrated director. He has also worked as a producer and director on a variety of episodes in the Tales from the Crypt series .
Silver has been married to production assistant Karyn Fields since July 10, 1999. He is the owner of the production company Silver Pictures , with which he primarily produces action films, and together with Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler, he owns the company Dark Castle Entertainment , which primarily produces horror and horror films.
In 2012, Silver's decades-long relationship with Warner Brothers ended; since then he has been working as an independent producer.
