action

Nine years have passed since former teenage detective Veronica Mars left her hometown of Neptune, California and moved to New York City . There she leads a normal life with her boyfriend Stosh "Piz" Piznarski and is about to get a job at the renowned law firm Truman-Mann under the leadership of Gayle Buckley. Shortly thereafter, she receives a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan Echolls, who is now in the Navy, and asks her for help. Logan is charged with the murder of his girlfriend Carrie Bishop, a former Neptune high school student and pop star who goes by the stage name Bonnie DeVille . Believing in his innocence, Veronica returns to Neptune to help Logan find the right lawyers. She also meets her father Keith Mars, former sheriff and now private investigator in Neptune, who shows her that the city has been ravaged by corruption.

Although Veronica only wanted to stay briefly in Neptune and she got the job in the law firm, she begins to investigate the murder of Carrie Bishop. Her trail leads her to the ten-year class reunion of her year. There she meets her old friends Wallace Fennell and Cindy "Mac" MacKenzie, as well as the former biker Eli "Weevil" Navarro, who is now a family man. During the event, Veronica realizes that Carrie's murder had to do with events nine years ago. At that time Carrie was with her friend Susan Knight as well as Dick Casablancas, Luke Haldeman and his fiancés Gia Goodman and Stu "Cobb" Schuster on a boat from which Susan disappeared without a trace. After Veronica's enemy Madison Sinclair plays a copy of her college sex tape with Piz, a fight breaks out and the reunion comes to an abrupt end. Veronica then goes to an after party and talks to Dick, Luke, Gia and Stu about what happened on the boat. Meanwhile, Weevil drives home and sees a biker group attack Celeste Kane. When he tries to rush to her help, he is shot by her. He is later arrested for possession of weapons. Keith then decides to end corruption in the city.

Veronica decides that Carrie has been killed so she couldn't comment on Susan's disappearance. When Carrie's compromising videos hit the internet, her trail leads to Vinnie Van Lowe. He provided spyware to all tablet PCs that stars like Carrie received as a gift at the MTV Music Awards. This leads Veronica to track down Gia and Luke, who lured Logan to the scene the night Carrie died. With the evidence, Veronica and Logan go to Sheriff Dan Lamb, who ignores the evidence and continues to present Logan as the perpetrator. Little does the sheriff know that Veronica is recording the call. Later she calls her friend Piz to explain that she has to stay in Neptune longer. Piz is disappointed and ends the relationship with her. In addition, her job at Truman-Mann is withdrawn, which leads to an argument between her and Keith. After talking to his daughter, Keith has a secret meeting with Deputy Jerry Sacks, who is ready to testify against the corrupt police officers. However, the two are hit by a car. Keith is badly injured while Sacks dies. After these events, Veronica and Logan get closer again and the two sleep together.

The next day the two set about convicting Gia and Luke. Veronica sends Gia flowers with a bug in there. She also calls Gia in Carrie's voice. Gia panics and calls her accomplice. This is not Luke, but Cobb. Veronica then pays Gia a visit and confronts her. Gia admits that Susan died of a drug overdose and that she, Carrie, and Luke tossed the body overboard. They were photographed by Cobb and then blackmailed with the pictures. Carrie couldn't live with that anymore and wanted to confess everything. With Gia's help, Cobb got into Carrie's apartment, killed her, and knocked Logan down to suspect him. Since Veronica uses an old listening device that runs on the same frequency as a local radio station, Cobb overhears everything from the apartment across from Gia. He shoots Gia through the window and tries to kill Veronica too. She calls the police and manages to knock Cobb down with a golf club.

After the murder is solved, Logan returns to active duty in the Navy, but promises to return to Veronica. After the recording was published, Sheriff Lamb was publicly criticized and had to arrest Cobb. Keith is slowly recovering, and Veronica decides to stay in Neptune to fight corruption in the city.

backgrounds

Production development

After the television series Veronica Mars was canceled in 2007, Rob Thomas wrote a script to continue the story as a feature film, but the producing film studio Warner Bros. was not interested in funding the project. A few years passed, but in March 2013 Thomas and leading actress Kristen Bell announced that a Veronica Mars film was being planned. The film is to be financed through the Internet platform Kickstarter.com . Within a day the target of 2 million US dollars was exceeded and thus set some records. The campaign broke the one- and two-million-dollar barrier faster than any other and also had the most supporters (91,585 in total). Veronica Mars is thus the largest ever realized film project that has been financed through crowdfunding. By the end of the Kickstarter campaign on April 13, 2013, the project had raised $ 5.7 million. After the campaign was successful, Warner Bros. joined the project and increased the budget to 6 million US dollars.

In April, series creator Rob Thomas finished the script and took over the position of director. In the same month Jason Dohring signed for the film and slipped back into the role of Logan Echoll . Even Enrico Colantoni , Percy Daggs III , Chris Lowell , Francis Capra , Sam Huntington , Amanda Noret , Daran Norris and Tina Majorino announced their return to feature film and will be shown again in their series roles. On July 14, 2013, Rob Thomas announced that Leighton Meester would not be returning to her role as Carrie Bishop due to scheduling conflicts . Her role was taken over by the musician Andrea Estella . Jerry O'Connell , Christiann Castallenos and Eden Sher joined the cast .

James Berardinelli of Reelviews.net was delighted and said the film would be "a lovely fan service, an oversized TV reunion for the cinema". Sheri Linden judged that Rob Thomas gives the film "a lot of self-assurance", "especially with the bad guy roles." Linden criticized, however, that it has "no real quality".

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times was critical of the film, saying that it came out "like a glorified TV series, with acceptable message and average acting and a not very innovative story such as has been seen a hundred times on television." . Even The Guardian judged rather critically, on the grounds that "this (r) Fan-funded revival of teen series (...) it is not a real film" creates.
