The Dandy Warhols is an American rock band formed in Portland , Oregon in 1994 . Her name is a reference to the artist Andy Warhol .
history
The Dandy Warhols was founded in 1994, consisting of frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor ( vocals and guitar ), Peter Holmström (guitar), Zia McCabe ( keyboard ) and Eric Hedford ( drums ). Musically, the group is closest to psychedelic rock or power pop . It is also influenced by rock 'n' roll and garage rock . The name of the band is derived from the pop art artist Andy Warhol , who was particularly popular in the USA in the 1960s and in whose circle in New York the band Velvet Underground , from which The Dandy Warhols had a strong musical influence is, lived at times.
Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Peter Holmström met at a music camp in Oregon at the age of 14 . Taylor-Taylor began playing drums in a glam rock band called Beauty Stab . After they both graduated from college , they decided to form a rock band together.
The first album was released in 1995 under the title Dandy's Rule OK? Capitol Records signed the band that same year. Nevertheless, the new label did not want to release the band's second album on the grounds that it did not contain any hits. Disappointed but not discouraged, the band set out to rehearse and write new songs. In 1997, the album Dandy Warhol's Come Down was released . Although the album did not lead to the longed-for breakthrough in the USA, the band became more and more an insider tip in Europe. The increased sales in Europe eventually led to the single Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth being filmed as a music video by star photographer David LaChapelle . The drummer Eric Hedford left the group in 1998. He replaced Taylor's cousin Brent DeBoer. The band's final breakthrough came in 2002 with the title Bohemian Like You from the album Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, which was released in 2000 and featured as background music in a Vodafone commercial. In the same year, Peter Holmström married his long-time girlfriend and took her maiden name Loew. The 2003 album Welcome to the Monkey House was created in collaboration with members of the Duran Duran group . In March 2005, keyboard player Zia McCabe, who was heavily pregnant with her first child, Matilda Louise, made headlines when she posed naked for the SuicideGirls website . In September 2005, the fifth album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars, was released. The single, Smoke It , was boycotted by most American radio stations because it included an invitation to smoke marijuana .
The band also contributed the theme song to the Veronica Mars series with We Used to Be Friends and to American Campus with Solid .
