Freddie Gibbs (born June 14, 1982 in Gary , Indiana ; real name Frederick Tipton ) is an American rapper whose music is assigned to gangsta rap . He became famous through a series of mixtapes published free of charge on the Internet . His pseudonym comes from the protagonist of the blaxploitation film Black Caesar .

Life

Early years

Freddie Gibbs grew up in the town of Gary, which was hit by high unemployment and crime rates due to the extensive disappearance of the steel industry . He dealt with drugs at an early age and was guilty of unauthorized possession of firearms; with the black horses , however, he started relatively late. He lost his football scholarship from Ball State University due to poor grades, and later left the military due to marijuana use. At times he was in prison. In 2004 Gibbs began to take a serious look at rap and released two mixtapes that same year.

Career

In 2006, Interscope Records signed him on the recommendation of an A&R and Gibbs temporarily moved to Los Angeles . For a planned debut album he worked with producers Polow da Don and Just Blaze , among others . The following year Gibbs' A&R left the record label and shortly thereafter his own contract was terminated. Gibbs was mentioned after their publication in the Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker, among others .

In March 2010 he was one of the ten most important rap newcomers of the year on the cover of the hip-hop magazine XXL .
