Karl Oberhoffer
Karl Oberhoffer , also Oberhofer , ( June 4, 1811 in Vienna - February 21, 1885 in Karlsruhe ) was an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ).
Life
His beautiful voice was first noticed when he sang in the church choir of his hometown. Good friends advised him to turn to opera, which he did. First he got himself an engagement at the Court Opera Theater in Vienna. However, since he only found employment there in small roles, he went to Berlin, where he successfully worked as a baritone at the Königstädtisches Theater . He shared his successes with Franziska Sontag and Josef Spitzender and everyone regretted his departure in 1841. In that year he accepted a call to the Hofbühne in Karlsruhe, where he worked artistically until August 1, 1876. In that year he ended his stage career and received the Knight's Cross II. Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . However, he continued to perform as an oratorio singer . Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy called him the best singer of "Paul" on the occasion of the music festival in 1844 in Zweibrücken.
Oberhoffer was married to Pauline, nee Edle von Jancowicz (1808–1871). The later Prussian infantry general Franz von Oberhoffer (1838–1920) emerged from the marriage.
