Franziska Sontag

Franziska Sontag , née Franziska Martloff or Franziska Markloff (born January 12, 1788 in Heddernheim , † April 10, 1865 in Dresden ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ) and stage actress .

Martloff was the daughter of an electoral official and was already on stage at the age of twelve. She received her first engagement at the Stadttheater Mainz and from there moved to the Theater Koblenz .

Between 1812 and 1814 Martloff appeared at the Darmstadt Court Theater and was seen there together with August Wilhelm Iffland, among others. In 1814 she went to the Deutsches Theater in Prague and stayed there until 1824. Over time, she replaced her colleague Sophie Schröder there as the “first actress”.

From 1824 extensive guest tours to Vienna and Berlin followed . Martloff married her colleague, the actor Franz Sontag , and had two daughters with him, Henriette and Nina , who both later also went to the stage. Son Karl Sontag became an actor and playwright.

In 1837 Martloff retired from the stage and settled in Dresden. She died on April 10, 1865 and found her final resting place in the Old Catholic Cemetery .
