Dark Castle Entertainment
Dark Castle Entertainment is a division of Silver Pictures founded by Joel Silver ( Matrix 1–3 ), Robert Zemeckis ( Back to the Future 1–3 ) and Gilbert Adler , which mostly produces horror films.
history
Dark Castle Entertainment initially mainly produced remakes from the 1950s - including some classics by director William Castle , who was known for his horror films and, above all, for their unconventional marketing.
Dark Castle Entertainment was founded in 1999 to regularly produce horror films. Every new film should have a classic model, but it was important to implement the motif in a modern way and to tell the story in a new way based on classic elements.
Since the films (by Hollywood standards) are produced cheaply abroad (Canada, Australia and Germany), it has been easy for Dark Castle Entertainment to make a profit so far. The most successful so far have been Gothika (with Halle Berry ) with a total of 141 million US dollars and Ghost Ship and 13 ghosts with 68 million US dollars. The film House of Wax made headlines largely through the participation of Paris Hilton and grossed 64 million US dollars.
The 2007 production The Reaping (starring Hilary Swank and David Morrissey ) is about a young woman investigating mysterious events of biblical proportions in a small town in Texas. Orphan became Dark Castle's final hit in 2009 (grossing $ 78 million on a budget of $ 20 million). The films after that flopped, including ambitious productions such as Ninja Assassin , Splice - Das Genexperiment or Bullet in the Head .
In 2008, Joel Silver concluded a strategic alliance with the German Studio Babelsberg AG , which provides for the production of Dark Castle films in Babelsberg and a financial participation by the German studio. Since the last projects did not achieve the desired success, the production of further films was put on hold because, according to Jason Blum, there is currently no suitable project for Dark Castle.
