Greg Rucka (born November 29, 1969 in San Francisco ) is an American author of crime novels and comics . He is married to comic book writer Jen Van Meter .

Career

He began his writing career with the Atticus Kodiak novels, the title character of which works as a professional bodyguard. The series consists of seven volumes that have not yet been published in German. Other novels written by Rucka are Fistful of Rain , A Gentleman's Game (German: Jihad ), Private Wars and The Last Run . The content of the last three ties in with his comic series Queen & Country .

From 1998 Rucka began writing for the comics with his mini-series Whiteout , published by Oni Press . The story of a murder in an Antarctic base received several nominations for the Eisner Award and in 2009 with Kate Beckinsale starring filmed . In 2000 the sequel Whiteout: Melt was released .

In these, as in many of his subsequent books, the focus is on strong, independent female characters. This also applies to the series Queen & Country , which was again published by Oni Press between 2001 and 2007 , which tells of the actions of a department of the British secret service, the Secret Intelligence Service .

The success of his publications meant that Rucka now also increasingly worked for the two largest US comic publishers, DC and Marvel . In addition to scripts for the series Superman and Wonder Woman , he focused on thematically related to the crime genre, especially with stories for various Batman series , but also for Marvel comic heroes such as Punisher , Wolverine , Daredevil and Elektra . In particular, the series Gotham Central , which is based around the Batman character but is designed as a realistic police comic , written in collaboration with his author colleague Ed Brubaker , earned him a lot of recognition and prizes such as the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award .

In the alternately written by Rucka and Geoff Johns , Grant Morrison and Mark Waid from May 2006 to May 2007 published by DC and published weekly series 52 , a new version of the superhero Batwoman was introduced. This Rucka then devoted himself in numbers 854-865 of the series Detective Comics , among others with JH Williams III as a draftsman. After his collaboration with DC ended, Oni Press published two miniseries about the female private investigator Dex Parios under the title Stumptown in Portland - where Rucka also lives - in 2009 and 2012 .

In July 2011, Rucka started the webcomic Lady Saber and the Pirates of the Ineffable Ether together with the illustrator Rick Burchett , a series belonging to the steampunk genre , which will also appear in book form after a successful Kickstarter campaign . In 2013, Rucka brought out the dystopian science fiction series Lazarus for the Image Comics publisher , with Michael Lark as the illustrator . In 2015 and 2017 he published a Star Wars novel .

In 2020 the film The Old Guard was released , which is based on Rucka's graphic novel of the same name and for which he himself was responsible for the script.
