The Ferrari 456 is a Berlinetta 2 + 2 seater from the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari , which was produced from January 1993 to June 2004.

Initially it was marketed as the 456 GT and 456 GTA (with automatic transmission) and came onto the market in 1998 as a modified version 456M (M stands for Modificato). It was an improved version of the GT in terms of aerodynamics, comfort and ergonomics in the interior. The body of Pininfarina has also been further developed. The name Ferrari 456 is derived from the displacement of a cylinder with 456 cm³.

Ferrari 456 GT / GTA

The Ferrari 456 GT was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1992. In January 1993 it came onto the market with a manual gearbox, the GTA with an automatic gearbox appeared in 1996. The engine and the gearbox on the rear axle are connected to one another via a drive shaft with three bearings in a steel tube. The six-speed transmission is combined in a transaxle design with the limited-slip differential from ZF in one housing.

The wheels are individually suspended from double wishbones with gas pressure shock absorbers, coil springs around and torsion bar - stabilizers . The 456 also has level control at the rear and an anti-dive system at the front. The driver can choose between “normal” and “sporty” suspension settings. The traction is controlled by a traction control system that is connected to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the engine control system via a CAN line and reacts immediately if you lose grip. This system was unique, three different control modes could be selected by the driver. A special feature is the electronically controlled spoiler integrated in the rear bumper. This changed its angle from 110 km / h according to the requirements and returned to its starting position from 80 km / h. The 456 GT was also equipped as standard with a leather luggage set and a servotronic that supports steering movements up to 70 km / h.

particularities

Seven 456 GT were converted into station wagons by Ferrari (custom-made for the Sultan of Brunei). There are also some sedan and convertible versions of the 456, which were also mainly made for the Sultan of Brunei.

Ferrari 456M

Ferrari 456M (1999)

In the fall of 1998 the revised 456M was presented. It was available with either manual or automatic transmission and was equipped with retractable headlights and a more rounded front section with an integral spoiler. The hood was made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The grille with integrated fog lights had been redesigned to improve engine cooling and brake ventilation. Due to a modified engine management system (Bosch Motronic 5.2), the engine of the 456M delivered a slightly higher output of 325 kW (442 hp) at 6250 rpm compared to its predecessor. The 456M had ventilated brake discs with aluminum brake calipers and 4-channel ABS, which was connected to ASR and EBD (an electronic brake force control). The rack and pinion steering was equipped with a speed-dependent servo. The 456M was the last production Ferrari with pop-up headlights to date .

Versions

The 456M could be designed even more individually by installing a few extras from Carrozzeria Scaglietti. The list published in 1997 contained offers for the 456M, F355 and 550 Maranello models, including various paintwork with a matching interior, the installation of a telephone or, for example, a battery charger with a connection in the engine compartment.
