The Ferrari 512 S Modulo is a design study created by the Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina . It was presented to the public in 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show .
design
The Modulo designed by the then chief designer of Pininfarina, Paolo Martin , was the last of a series of studies. The vehicle has an extremely flat body, in which the engine compartment and passenger cell are not visually separated. Conventional doors are also missing, instead the entire roof section, including the windshield, is moved forward to allow entry. All four wheels are partially covered. The bonnet has another special feature: It has 24 holes that reveal the V-12 mid-engine .
The Modulo received 22 design awards.
Technical specifications
A total of 25 of the chassis of the Ferrari 512 S were made, but not all of them were delivered to customers. The chassis with the number 23 is the technical basis of the Modulo. The Modulo is powered by a V-12 mid-engine with a displacement of 5.0 l and 557 hp (410 kW). The power-to-weight ratio is unusually low at around 1.6 kg per HP or 2.2 kg per kW. Ferrari stated the top speed as 350 km / h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.1 seconds. Due to the cladding of the steered front wheels, the Modulo has a very limited steering angle.
history
The unique specimen was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show and the Turin Motor Show in 1970 and attracted a great deal of attention. However, the design was too experimental for series production. The prototype then remained in a Pininfarina warehouse until it was sold to the American sports car collector James Glickenhaus in 2014 at an unknown price. According to its own information, Glickenhaus intends to completely restore the vehicle and obtain road approval. At the end of June 2019, while driving in Monaco, the exhaust set parts of the rear on fire and melted the paint. A built-in extinguishing system prevented worse damage.
