One woman in Ohio sees a bad image of the convict in the newspaper and thinks she recognizes him as her missing son. She sends her daughter Mary to the prison to visit the convict and find out if it is actually her son. Mary Douglas, who was too young to remember him when her brother left her parents' home, sets off. James is able to convince Mary that he is not her brother. He tells her that her brother died a hero during the war. Then he surrenders to his fate and begins his execution.
