The Ferrari 348 is a sports car built from 1989 to 1995 by the Italian manufacturer Ferrari . It was initially offered as a 348 tb Berlinetta and a 348 ts Targa version , later also as a Spider . It was powered by the newly developed 3.4 liter V8 engine from the Ferrari Mondial introduced a few months earlier . The Ferrari 348 was the successor to the 328 .
Development history
The shape of the 348 designed by Pininfarina was strongly based on the Testarossa . The taillights are provided with a black grille cover and large air inlets in the doors ensure ventilation of the mid-engine , here too there is a fan behind each of the inlets, which forwards the air into the engine compartment.
The 348 has a 4 cm wider track and a 11 cm longer wheelbase than the 308 GTB and a self-supporting body . Therefore, the car is more spacious and stiffer than the 328 with a lattice frame . The longitudinally mounted V8, which for the first time in 1973 in the Dino 308 GT4 - there as a transverse mounting - was used, as well as behind the differential seated transmission , improve handling. As in the Mondial t after the facelift from 1989 and in the Formula 1 vehicle 312T from the 1970s, the transmission is installed transversely, which is referred to by the letter t (for trasversale) in the type designation. With a displacement of 3.4 liters, the 348 reaches a top speed of 278 km / h. The revised V8's maximum torque of 317 Nm is reached at 4200 rpm. Standard equipment includes central locking, leather seats, electric windows, ABS and a five-speed manual transmission. However, there were complaints about the seat quality, the driving experience and the noise level.
The Ferrari 348 Spider was presented at the same time at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show and on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles . The changes compared to the 348 tb / ts are: paintwork in body color up to the lower edge of the vehicle, newly framed front grille with Cavallino rampante, 15 kW (20 hp) more power through changes to the pistons and valves as well as the intake tract. A modified control unit with new control times and a modified exhaust system. In addition, the chassis was modified again. There are also changes in the interior and a. changed seats. Half a year later, the two basic models also received these changes and were now called GTB (tb) and GTS (ts).
Together with Michelotto , Ferrari developed a small series of performance-enhanced 348GTC models (268 kW (364 PS) to 370 kW (503 PS)) in 1994. Some of these 348 Competizione racing versions have also been approved for the road in Europe. In the 348GTC models, components on the front and rear bumpers, seats and door panels are made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic . The Le Mans racing models have F40 drive shafts.
There are different details about the total number of spiders produced. It is around 1100 copies. Half of them went to the USA. Production period: 1993 to 1995.
The 348 series was Ferrari's “volume model” in the 1990s, with planned sales of 2,500 units per year. In 1994 the 348 was replaced by the 355 .
