The Ferrari Testarossa is a car of Ferrari , the 1984 as a successor to the Ferrari 512 BB went into production. The name is reminiscent of the successful Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa front-engined racing cars of the 1950s and early 1960s. The body of the Testarossa was designed by Pininfarina and manufactured in the Scaglietti bodywork in Modena .

history

The name of the vehicle, which means “red head” in Italian , is derived from the red painted valve covers of the 12-cylinder engine. This is actually the third Testarossa model, but the first two ( 250 Testa Rossa and 500 Testa Rossa ) were spelled Testa Rossa with the correct linguistic separation . Ferrari had the rights to the name Testarossa protected, but lost them after a legal dispute with the Nuremberg toy manufacturer Kurt Hesse before the Düsseldorf Regional Court on August 2, 2017. The reason given was that Ferrari had not used the brand for too long.

The mid-engine is technically a 180 ° V-engine and no boxer engine , since each of the connecting rods of two opposite pistons , a crankshaft throw share. It has two overhead camshafts ( DOHC ) per cylinder head and mechanical K-Jetronic gasoline injection from Bosch. The maximum output is 287 kW (390 hp). The car reaches a top speed of around 290 km / h and accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 5.3 s. The Testarossa covers the distance of 400 meters from a standing start in 13.5 seconds.

The car uses the same platform as its predecessor, the Ferrari 512 BB . Under the body there is a frame that stands out due to its torsional stiffness . It differs from conventional chassis in that it has a subframe into which the engine and transmission are integrated. It can be detached to facilitate access to the engine if necessary. The wheels are suspended from double wishbones at the front and double wishbones at the rear. A rear wishbone is designed in a trapezoidal shape to guide the track. Because of the unfavorable weight distribution of 40:60 (front axle: rear axle), the Testarossa has two spring struts per wheel on the rear axle (shock absorber-coil spring combination) and different tire sizes that improve traction - 225/50 on the front axle and 225/50 on the rear axle wider 255/50 tires fitted. A significant difference is the radiator: the 512 BB has a single radiator in the front, the Testarossa a pair on each side in front of the rear wheels. This makes the wide body and the distinctive side slits necessary. The latter represented a completely new style element in their time, which was often copied in the tuning scene in the following years .

A total of 7,177 Testarossa , 2,261 512 TR and 501 F512 M were produced. This makes them one of the most widespread of the most popular Ferrari models.

512 TR

Ferrari 512 TR

The original Testarossa was revised in 1991 and appeared as the 512 TR . The output of the 4.9-liter engine has been increased to 315 kW (428 hp); this increase in performance was mainly achieved through the modified cylinder heads with larger valves, the modified exhaust system and the new air boxes. Visually, the 512 TR stands out from the Testarossa primarily in the design of the front. Instead of the continuously parallel grill, it is now trapezoidal and takes over the design line of the 348 tb . At the rear, the elevation on the engine cover is flatter and has an additional cooling slot; the perforated metal straps on the two fins of the bonnet are missing and the rear apron forms a border for the exhaust pipes.

F512 M

The F512 M (M for Modificata ) was the last version of the Testarossa in 1994. The engine output was 324 kW (440 hp). It was the last unlimited mid-engine twelve-cylinder and the last Ferrari model to have a flat engine . The car can be recognized at the front by lights behind clear glass (previously they were folding headlights) and at the rear by two round light elements on the right and left (on the Testarossa and 512 TR, the lights were behind the black radiator panels). It was 1996 by the front engine -driven 550 Maranello replaced.

Use in movies and media

  • Detective James "Sonny" Crockett ( Don Johnson ) drove a white Testarossa in the Miami Vice TV series from season 3.
  • A Testarossa was also used in Sega's successful slot machine game Out Run .

Prominent owners

Prominent owners of a Testarossa included the French film actor Alain Delon , the musicians Elton John , Dr. Dre and Dieter Bohlen as well as the Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger, who was then working for Ferrari . In 1987 Pininfarina designed a Testarossa Spider in silver with a white hood for the then Fiat President Giovanni Agnelli .
