The Ferrari 308 is a sports car from the manufacturer Ferrari , which was sold from 1975 to 1985 as a Coupé (308 GTB) and Spider (308 GTS).

Model names

In the designation 308, the first two digits stand for the displacement in deciliters, in this case for engines with three liters displacement. The third digit indicates the number of cylinders .

The following letters “GT” stand for Gran Turismo . In the case of the “GTB”, the following letter describes a “Berlinetta”, ie a small Berlina limousine . In the case of the GTS, the "S" describes the open version Spider , which in the case of the 308 is equipped with a targa roof that can be stowed behind the seats.

Development history

prolog

In the 1960s, mid-engine concepts were widespread in racing , but were uncommon in road vehicles. Even Enzo Ferrari saw the construction of its 12-cylinder engines to be too risky to dispense them to customers. He commissioned Sergio Pininfarina to develop a mid-engine prototype based on a 6-cylinder engine. The design was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1965 and was well received. From 1968 onwards, a series of two-seaters was sold under the brand name Dino . The Dino 206 GT was followed in 1969 by the more powerful Ferrari Dino 246 GT and its open version Dino 246 GTS , whose production continued until 1973. The Dino 308 GT , which was produced from 1974 , had an 8-cylinder engine, but was designed as a 2 + 2-seater and only available as a coupé; In addition, with a body designed by Bertone , which took a lot of getting used to.

308 GTB / GTS (1975-1980)

To close the gap in the portfolio, the 308 GTB was introduced in 1975, establishing a successful series that was to last for a total of 10 years. The first 308 GTB had a GRP body (called "Vetroresina" in Italian), but Scaglietti changed after around 400 to 808 (the information on the exact number of units is contradicting one another, and there is often talk of almost 600 polyester bodies being manufactured) produced models to a conventional steel body, as the production of the body from glass fiber reinforced plastic was too time-consuming and provided them with a Targa with a removable roof with the 308 GTS . The 308 GTB was based on the same chassis as the Dino 246 GT (21 cm shorter than the 2 + 2-seater Dino 308 GT4), but had a wider track and the same transverse V8 engine and load-bearing gearbox as the 308 GT4 . The camshafts of the engines were (since the Dino 308 GT4 ), unlike the Dino 246 GT , driven with toothed belts instead of chains, as was previously the case with Ferrari.

The 308 GTB and GTS built until 1980 had a mixture preparation by four Weber double carburettors 40DCNF.

The 308 GTB, which was built until 1980, had an engine with dry sump lubrication . The 308 GTS and all subsequent Berlinetta and Spider models with intake manifold injection had engines with wet sump lubrication .

Outwardly, it looked similar to the Ferrari 365 GT / 4 BB , which was launched in 1973. The air inlet behind the driver's door supplied the oil cooler behind it; the one on the right led to the air filter. The 308 GTB was faster than the Dino 246 GT - 255 instead of 240 km / h - and accelerated better.

Between 1975 and 1981 a total of 2897 308 GTB and 3219 308 GTS were sold. The following 308 GTBi / GTSi , which were equipped with intake manifold injection due to the stricter exhaust gas regulations (especially in the USA) , sold well, but were and are still not as highly valued as their reduced- power version as their predecessors, thanks to the four double carburetors were much more toxic (and also louder). Not only because of the small number of units, but also thanks to the lower curb weight, the models with a GRP body made from 1975 to 1977 are the most popular model series. The successors to the models with manifold injection, the offshoots with four-valve technology, were also very popular. The 308 also formed the basis for the later model series 328 with larger 3.2-liter V8 engines.

308 GTBi / GTSi (1980–1983)

The i appended to the model name stood for "iniezione" and indicated the change from the carburetor system to intake manifold injection. From 1980 to 1983 494 GTBi and 1743 GTSi were sold. Their engines had a Bosch K-Jetronic , which reduced consumption and emissions, but at the same time throttled the engine to 160 kW.

308 GTB / GTS Quattrovalvole (1982–1985)

From 1982 to 1985 the GTBi were equipped with quattrovalvole (four-valve technology), which increased the output to 179 kW and the top speed to 258 km / h. Within three years, 748 GTB QV and 3042 GTS QV were produced. The model with four-valve technology was replaced in 1985 by the virtually identical 328, which had a displacement of 3.2 liters.

208 GTB / GTS (1980–1981) and 208 GTB / GTS Turbo (1982–1986)

Ferrari 208 GTS

The versions 208 GTB / GTS (116 kW, top speed 215 km / h) and 208 GTB / GTS Turbo (164 kW, top speed 242 km / h), primarily produced for the Italian market, represent a specialty the expenses for vehicles with more than two liters of displacement could not be deducted from the tax, these vehicles were equipped with a V8 engine from 1980, which had a displacement of only 1990 cm³. The Ferrari 208 thus has the smallest V8 engine installed in a production car to date.

The 308 in popular culture

The 308 GTS became known among other things through the US TV series Magnum . There was no influence from Ferrari to achieve a product placement ; the producers had already decided in advance for the 308 GTS, despite some offers from other manufacturers. According to various US sources, seven to 17 vehicles were used for the shooting, some of them exclusively as standing models. Allegedly, the seat was modified on one copy so that the tall actor Tom Selleck could take a more natural-looking position in the Ferrari. Vehicles of the series 308 GTS (1977–1980), 308 GTSi (1981–1982) and also 308 GTS Quattrovalvole were used. Vehicles of different series were used within one episode: In the opening credits of the first episodes you can see how the main actor is sitting in the vehicle, lifting the targa roof and pushing or throwing it back like a convertible top. In fact, the roof part is stowed standing behind the seats. This bug was fixed in all later episodes by cutting out the corresponding sequence, but retaining the rest of the scene.
