Tom Selleck
Thomas William "Tom" Selleck (born January 29, 1945 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American actor . He became known in 1980 as Thomas Magnum in the television series of the same name and has since played in numerous films such as Quigley the Australian , Another Three Men, Still a Baby or In & Out and television productions such as Friends or Blue Bloods - Crime Scene New York .
life and career
After the High School of 1.93 m wide Selleck on the studied University of Southern California with a basketball - scholarship . He then took classes at the Beverly Hills Playhouse drama school. In 1970 he made his debut in the television production Hunt for the Cinema Killer .
Numerous appearances in B-Movies followed before his breakthrough in 1980 with the television thriller Magnum and the television series of the same name based on it. He played the Hawaiian private detective and Ferrari lover Thomas Magnum for eight years and became one of the most famous and popular actors of the 1980s. For the role he was awarded an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award and received the awards “God's Gift to Women” and “Sexiest Man of America” as a “heartthrob”. During this time he was forced to turn down several lucrative role offers for contractual reasons. For example, he was originally Steven Spielberg's preferred cast for the role of Indiana Jones , which then went to Harrison Ford .
Despite various box office successes such as Quigley the Australian , Three Men , Another Baby and In & Out , Selleck was primarily known as a television star. A good half of his films are television productions. In the hit sitcom Friends , he impersonated ten episodes as Dr. Richard Burke the friend of Monica Geller ( Courteney Cox ). Since 2005, Selleck has been responsible for the television adaptations of several crime novels by Robert B. Parker , who had already provided the templates for the television series Spenser , as producer and leading actor . The TV film series Jesse Stone is about the alcoholic and divorced police chief of the same name in the fictional town of Paradise, Massachusetts . Selleck took on the title role in nine film adaptations.
In 2010 Selleck starred in the action comedy Kiss & Kill with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl in the lead roles. Since autumn 2010 he has been one of the leading actors in the US police series Blue Bloods - Crime Scene New York .
Private
Tom Selleck was married to the former model Jacqueline Ray from 1970 to 1982, whose son (* 1966) he adopted from his first marriage . He has been married to his colleague Jillie Mack (* 1957) since 1987, their daughter was born in 1988. Both live on an avocado farm in Hidden Valley, Ventura County .
Trivia
- Rosie O'Donnell caused a sensation when she asked Selleck in 1999 on her talk show The Rosie O'Donnell Show about his membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA) about gun use and possession in the United States. Selleck was also a member of the board of the NRA.
- The television series Magnum made the mustache his trademark, without which he has rarely been seen since the 1980s. In his role as small town police chief Jesse Stone , Selleck also wore a goatee.
- His German voice actor is mostly Norbert Langer .
- Selleck participated in a number of volleyball tournaments in the 1980s and was honorary captain when the US national team won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
- In July 2015, Selleck was charged with water theft in California, which suffered a drought from late 2011 to 2017 . Media reported that the Calleguas Municipal Water District filed a lawsuit against Selleck in the Ventura County Court. Selleck allegedly tapped large amounts of water in a tank truck from a fire hydrant near his Westlake Village ranch. This is said to have determined private detectives on behalf of the company. A few days later the case was settled out of court and the lawsuit withdrawn.
