Jesse Stone is the protagonist of a series of crime novels originally written by Robert B. Parker and later continued by Michael Brandman and Reed Farrel Coleman . Starting in 2005, a series of television films were made based on the novels.

action

The novels and films are about the alcoholic and divorced Jesse Stone, who is the chief of police in the fictional town of Paradise, Massachusetts . Jesse Stone is an experienced policeman, taciturn and reserved and that is precisely why he is personable. The stories are shaped by typical American small-town life, partly enriched with influences from the nearby city of Boston .

Novels

The first nine novels are by the American author Robert B. Parker. He also had Jesse Stone appear in three novels in his series about the private detectives Spenser and Sunny Randall. After the author's death in 2010, the Jesse Stone series was continued by Michael Brandman and later by Reed Farrel Coleman . Brandman previously wrote the scripts for the series.

All 9 volumes that Robert B. Parker wrote himself have been translated into German.

Movies

Based on the novels, CBS realized a number of television films starring Tom Selleck . The first four films adhere closely to the templates, but the order of the novels was not adhered to. Regarding the character of Jesse Stone, apart from the age difference, they were also closely based on the novel. In the films, Stone is about twenty years older than in the books.

Starting with the fifth film, Thin Ice , the film series broke away from the book with independent stories.

After the eighth film was broadcast, the US broadcaster CBS announced in May 2012 that it would not produce any more films. Meanwhile, however, a ninth film has been made, Lost in Paradise , which was produced by Sony Pictures Television and premiered in the US on October 18, 2015. Lost in Paradise was broadcast in Germany on August 3, 2019 by ZDF.

The films were not shot in the USA, but on the Canadian east coast in Nova Scotia . All of the outdoor shots for Paradise were shot in Lunenburg ; the role of Boston took over Halifax . Further recordings were made in other locations in the region.
