At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , volleyball tournaments were held for women and men.

For the men, the ten qualified teams were drawn in two groups with five participants each. The preliminary round was held according to the "everyone against everyone" mode. The two best teams in each group met each other in the semi-finals. The remaining teams played from places five to ten.

For women there were two groups with four participants each. The two best teams in each group met each other in the semi-finals. The remaining teams played from places five to eight.

The games were played in Los Angeles from July 29th to August 11th. The venue was the Long Beach Arena.

Preliminary round

In Group A, three teams were tied at the end. The better set ratio brought Brazil and the USA to the semi-finals. In Group B, the two best teams met right from the start. Despite the win over Canada, Italy only stayed second in the table.

Final round

Tunisia won the duel of the underdogs without a win in the preliminary round against Egypt in five sets and finished ninth.

In the semifinals on August 8, the USA won the North American duel against Canada in three sets. Brazil defeated the Italians, who then took the bronze medal. The final on August 11 was decided by the Americans led by Charles Kiraly .

Preliminary round

In Group A, Japan finished first with three wins in three games. Peru reached the semi-finals with two wins. In Group B, the German women lost their first two games against the eventual finalists USA and China. Therefore, after the final victory against Brazil, only the third place remained.

Final round

After a win against Canada and a defeat against South Korea, the women of the DVV reached sixth place.

In the semifinals on August 5, the USA prevailed against Peru, while China won the Asian duel against Japan. The Japanese then secured the bronze medal. China won the final against the USA on August 9th.

The two Japanese Eiji Shimomura and Mikiyasu Tanaka were disqualified for doping . The Japanese team's coach was banned from the Olympics for life.
