The Chinese national women's volleyball team is a selection of the best Chinese female players represented by the China Volleyball Association in international tournaments and internationals. With two world championship titles, three Olympic gold medals and several victories in other competitions, the Chinese women are among the most successful teams in the world. In Asia they are the most successful nations among women.

history

World championships

China first took part in a volleyball world championship in 1956 and finished sixth. In 1962 , the Chinese women finished ninth and in 1974 came 14th place, their worst result so far. Since then, the Chinese have been at every World Cup. Four years later, they improved to sixth place. In 1982 in Peru they defeated the host's team in the final and became world champions for the first time. In 1986 they successfully defended their world title in the final against Cuba . At the 1990 tournament in their own country they were defeated in the final of the Soviet Union . Four years later , they didn't get past eighth place. But in 1998 they were runner-up again in the final against defending champion Cuba. In 2002 in Germany they lost the game for third place against Russia. In 2006 they finished fifth and in 2010 they had the second worst result. In 2014 in Italy they reached the final and became vice world champion for the third time after losing to the USA . In the 2018 World Cup they came to the third place.

In 1984 in Los Angeles the Chinese took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time and immediately won the gold medal in the final against the USA. A bronze medal was added at the 1988 Games . The Tournament 1992 ended China in seventh place. In 1996 in Barcelona they were only defeated in the final against Cuba. After a fifth place in 2000 , the Chinese women became Olympic champions for the second time in Athens against Russia in 2004 . As the host, they won the bronze medal in Beijing in 2008 . They finished the 2012 tournament in fifth place. In 2016 they achieved their third Olympic victory with a victory in the final against Serbia .

Asian Championships

China is the most successful nation in the Asian volleyball championship . At the premiere in 1975, the women came third. In 1979 they won their first continental title against Japan . Four years later, the Japanese were successful as hosts in the final against China. But in 1987 the Chinese took back the title - also as hosts. Until 2003 they prevailed in the finals against Japan or South Korea . In 2005 they managed to win another title at home in the final against Kazakhstan . In the next two tournaments in 2007 and 2009, however, they had to admit defeat Japan and Thailand . In 2011 against Japan and in 2015 against Thailand they won further tournaments. In 2013, 2017 and 2019, however, they missed the medal ranks as fourth.

World cup

China finished fourth in its first appearance in the World Cup in 1977. In 1981 the Chinese won the competition in the final against Japan. Four years later they defended their title against Cuba. In 1989 they took third place. At the 1991 tournament there was again the final against Cuba, this time with the success for the opponent. In the next two tournaments, the Chinese finished third and fifth. In 2003 they won their third title against Brazil . In 2007 they did not take part in the World Cup as the host of the following Olympic Games. They finished the 2011 tournament in third place. In 2015 they won their fourth title with a final win against Serbia. They successfully defended this title in the 2019 final against the USA .

Nations League

At the Nations League 2018 , China hosted the final round and came in third. The final round in 2019 also took place in China and there was another bronze medal.

World Grand Prix

China was at all tournaments of the World Grand Prix . At the premiere in 1993 , the Chinese faced Cuba in the final. The following year they finished third. Then they just missed the medal ranks four times in fourth and fifth. In 1999 there was another third place and in 2000 the People's Republic came in fourth again. Then they lost the finals in 2001 against the USA and in 2002 against Russia. The following year they took revenge against the Russians. Over the next three years, they finished fifth, third, and fifth again. In the 2007 final they had to admit defeat to the Dutch women. The tournaments from 2008 to 2010 they finished fifth and fourth before they achieved their worst result in this competition in 2011 as eighth. After a fifth place in 2012, they reached the final in 2013 , which they lost to Brazil. In the remaining editions from 2014 to 2017, they alternately finished fifth and fourth.
