The South Korean women's national volleyball team is a selection of the best South Korean women players represented by the Korea Volleyball Association in international tournaments and internationals.

history

World Championship

In their first two participation in a volleyball world championship , they reached South Koreans in 1967 and 1974 in third place. They finished the 1974 World Cup in fourth place. They finished seventh, eighth and five in the next three tournaments. In 1994 they lost the game for third place against Russia . After a ninth place in 1998, they were eliminated in Germany in the quarter-finals against Italy in 2002 . 2006 in Japan and four years later things went worse with 13th place. After missing the 2014 World Cup, South Korea also dropped out of the 2018 tournament in the preliminary round.

Olympic games

The first Olympic tournament in Tokyo in 1964 ended for the South Koreans in sixth place. In 1968 and 1972 they improved one place each. In 1976 in Montreal they celebrated their greatest success at the Olympic Games by winning the bronze medal. In 1984 they finished fifth. At the 1988 games, they were not eliminated from eighth place despite their home advantage. During the tournament in 1996 , they were sixth and four years later rollercoaster again. In 2004 in Athens they came in fifth. In 2008 they missed the qualification. In 2012 in London they lost the bronze game against Japan . At the 2016 tournament, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands . They secured their starting place for the 2020 Olympic Games at the Asian qualifying tournament .

Asian Championship

The South Koreans have participated in all Asian volleyball championships so far . At the premiere in 1975 they reached the final against Japan. After that, they came third three times. In 1989 they lost in the final against China . After two third places, there were four more lost finals against the Chinese. In 2003 the South Korean women finished third again. Then they missed the medals three times in a row as fourth. In 2011 and 2013 they again took third place. In 2015 they were defeated again in the final of China. In 2017 and as host also in 2019, there were further bronze medals.

World cup

South Korea was involved in all editions of the Volleyball World Cup . The South Koreans achieved their best results in this competition at the first tournaments in 1973 and 1977, in which they each came third. After that, they finished fifth and seventh twice. In the next editions they improved by one rank up to fourth place in 1999. From 2003 to 2011 things went worse with ninth and eighth place. South Korea finished the tournaments in 2015 and 2019 in sixth place.

Nations League

In the Nations League 2018 , the South Koreans finished twelfth. At the 2019 tournament , they did not get past 15th place.

World Grand Prix

The South Koreans finished fifth in the first three editions of the World Grand Prix and then sixth in 1996. In 1997 they achieved their best result when they came third. In the following three years there were placements between five and seven. In 2003 the South Koreans were absent for the first time. After that, they slipped from sixth to eleventh place before finishing ninth twice. After that, they were only irregularly represented at the Grand Prix and did not get past ninth place. With the 14th place they achieved one of their worst results at the last tournament in 2017.
