Olympic Summer Games 2020 / volleyball (hall) / qualification

For the volleyball tournaments of the Olympic Games 2020 , eleven other teams qualified for men and women in addition to the host Japan . Six places were awarded in each of the international qualifying tournaments in August 2019. The remaining participants were determined in January 2020 at continental tournaments.

International qualification

Participant and mode

Six tournaments took place in August 2019. The 24 best-placed teams in the volleyball world rankings from January 1, 2019 took part. They were divided into groups of four in a serpentine system. At each tournament the teams played one round each against each other. The tournament winners qualified for the Olympic Games.

African qualification

The African tournament took place in Cairo from January 7th to 11th, 2020 . Five teams determined the Olympic participant in a round, each against each other. Ghana missed the tournament at short notice due to organizational problems on arrival, which is why all of the team's games were rated 0: 3.

Asian qualification

The Asian tournament took place from January 7th to 12th, 2020 at the Sports Center Gymnasium in Jiangmen . The best teams of the 2019 Asian Cup that had not yet qualified through the international tournament competed, with Kazakhstan taking over for Pakistan . The teams first played in two groups of four before the Asian Olympic participant was determined in the semifinals and finals.

European qualification

The European tournament took place from January 5th to 10th, 2020 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin . In addition to the German national team as hosts, the top-ranked teams in the European rankings (as of the 2019 European Championship ) that had not yet qualified took part in the tournament. In two groups of four, everyone played against everyone. The group winners and runners-up met each other in the semifinals. The two finalists determined the last European participant for the Olympic tournament.

The tournament for North and Central America and Oceania took place from January 10th to 12th, 2020 at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver . The three best teams in the NORCECA championship that did not qualify via the international qualifying tournament, as well as the winner of the NORCECA Champions Cup, determined the Olympic participant in one round, each against each other.

The Asian tournament was held from January 7th to 12th, 2020 at Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima . The seven best teams of the 2019 Asian Cup competed, although Hong Kong , which was also eligible to start , did not participate. The teams initially played in two groups before the Asian Olympic participant was determined in the semifinals and finals.
