Jiangmen ( Chinese  江门 市 , Pinyin Jiāngmén Shì  - "river gate") is a district-free city in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong . It is the city of origin of many overseas Chinese .

geography

The city is located west of the Pearl River estuary , about 60 km southwest of Guangdong's metropolis, Guangzhou . The surface of Jiangmen is flat, only in the west it is slightly hilly. The territory is criss-crossed by numerous rivers, inlets and canals. The most important river is the West River , whose main arm or west arm flows east of the city center. The Peng River crosses the city in its center.

The climate is subtropical to tropical ; the average January temperature is 13 ° C, the average July temperature around 28 ° C. The annual rainfall is around 1900 mm.

economy

Jiangmen was already of great importance for China's foreign trade during the Qing Dynasty ; the present port was put into operation in 1904 .

Light industry dominates economically in Jiangmen. Main products that are manufactured are textiles, electronic products, furniture, leather products, food, machinery, building materials and chemical products; Paper manufacture and sugar refining have a long tradition.

The county-level city of Jiangmen is composed of three municipalities and four independent cities:

  • District Jianghai (江海区), 107 square kilometers, about 150,000 inhabitants;
  • Pengjiang district (蓬江区), 325 km², approx. 430,000 inhabitants;
  • Xinhui District (新 会 区), 1,260 km², approx. 730,000 inhabitants;
  • City of Enping (恩平 市), 1,698 km², approx. 470,000 inhabitants;
  • City of Taishan (台山 市), 3,286 km², approx. 990,000 inhabitants;
  • City of Kaiping (开平 市), 1,659 km², approx. 680,000 inhabitants;
  • City of Heshan (鹤山 市), 1,108 km², approx. 360,000 inhabitants.

The actual urban area is in the two districts of Pengjiang and Jianghai, with the Peng River forming the border. These two districts of Jiangmen are bordered by Heshan to the northwest , Shunde to the northeast , Zhongshan to the west and Xinhui to the south . They themselves are further divided into eleven street districts and three large communities (all in Pengjiang). Hetang (荷塘 镇), Duruan (杜阮 镇) and Tangxia (棠下 镇) are the three major parishes, Chaolian (潮 连 街道) in Pengjiang and Lile (礼乐 街道) in Jianghai are major street districts in these two boroughs lie.

Jiangmen is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jiangmen .

Jiangmen is an important transportation hub in Guangdong. The city has the second largest river port in the province. Ships carry cargo and passengers up and down the West River to Macau and Hong Kong . In addition, Jiangmen is well connected to the provincial road network via highways in the direction of Foshan and Guangzhou , Zhongshan and in the west ( Kaiping , Yangjiang ).
