Meizhou ( Chinese  梅州 市 , Pinyin Méizhōu Shì ) is a district-free city in Guangdong Province in the People's Republic of China . Meizhou is located in the northeast of the province and is bordered by Fujian Province in the northeast and Jiangxi Province in the northwest . The municipal government is located in the Meijiang District . Most of the people in Meizhou speak Hakka .

history

Meizhou was formed as a prefecture in the 9th century . Meizhou City was finally established in 1988.

Administrative structure

Meizhou is made up of two boroughs , five counties and one urban district. These are:

  • Meijiang district (梅江 区), 323 km², approx. 306,100 inhabitants;
  • Meixian district (梅县 区), 2,755 km², approx. 610,000 inhabitants;
  • Dabu district (大埔县), 2,470 km², approx. 520,000 inhabitants;
  • Fengshun district (丰顺 县), 2,710 km², approx. 660,000 inhabitants;
  • Wuhua district (五 华县), 3,226 km², approx. 1.19 million inhabitants;
  • Pingyuan County (平远县), 1,381 km², approx. 250,000 inhabitants;
  • Jiaoling District (蕉岭 县), 957 km², approx. 220,000 inhabitants;
  • City of Xingning (兴宁 市), 2,104 km², approx. 1.12 million inhabitants;
